Well, I think it will receive design changes to make it similar to the iPad with a curved aluminum backing. The sandwiched glass would make it look far too similar to the iPhone 4, and they've already done flat chrome, so I see an iPad-like backing in the iPod touch's future.

I reckon a design change, but something totally different from the iPhone. I think it will take design tips from the iPad, but won't look exactly like it.

Ipods usually don't go for more than a couple years without a design change (with an exception being the ipod classic). The nano looks different every year.

I don't see apple going with the ipad design because of the rumors of a smaller ipad. Plus people that aren't as educated as us here on macrumors, may think its just a small ipad, and go for the cheaper device.

Maybe the new iPod touch will be a "small iPad"

I don't think apple will want to copy a design from one of their flagship products. They will keep the touch like a touch. The nano ditched the backing, so will the touch. You know how apple bought that crazy metal alloy company?I expect to see that become the new back of the iPod touch. Apple likes to keep the shape of iPod touch/iPhone similar, so I think the touch will be squared off. Also to add more room for extra features.

Why? The first-gen looked almost exactly like an iPhone 2G.

Not really.

I can see them definitely flattening the back. But still with curved edges that curve into the side to meet the front. I think it will look like a close cousin of the iPhone 4, but no glass back, and obviously no metal band around it. The back will be brushed aluminum like many of the other Apple products. I'd love it it it were black colored brush aluminum like is available on the Nano. That'd keep it in close cousin territory with the iPhone, look very sharp, but without the glass.

Why no metal band? The iPod touch needs an antenna too

I think it's going to go back to a shape similar to the 1st gen, but replace the chrome with aluminum. Personally, I like the 1st gen design much better than the current one. The 2nd and 3rd gen ones just feel too thin for when I try to play games.

It doesn't need ALL those antennas though, only one for Wifi, which is currently houses inside with no problem. But you do raise a good point. Apple moved them to the outside on the iPhone to make room for more stuff, like the additional cam and gyro and such. Maybe they'll follow this same thinking for the new touch as well.

YES. 1G is the best design.... and I'm not saying that because that's the one I have :)

There were two sections. One was 3g/4g and the other was wifi and bluetooth. The band in between them caused the issue. There wouldn't need to be a band, so why can wifi/Bluetooth be the whole band? It will only get better wifi signal, no harm from it.

I hope to god the design changes and looks more like the iPhone 4.

I hated the weird thin and curved 2g/3g design. Much prefer a shape like the 1g or iPhone 4
