If the new touch looks similar to the original iPhone 2G, that would be awesome, the aluminum feels much more sturdier, durable, and just plain better than the curved chrome backing of the current iPod touch 2G and 3G.

Well a crazy metal alloy will be better ;)

i actually like the iphone 2g - very macbook pro-esque

I'd make a poll for it, but about 90% of the people in this forum would agree with us. Why hasn't Apple used aluminum already? Or does the "oh shiny!" mentality reign supreme among Apple's target audience?

Personally, an aluminum design would be awesome and windows computers depress me because of the lack of beautiful aluminum.

It will probably change at some point, but most iPods have had a chrome back going all the way back to the original one, so maybe they've kept the chrome on the touch as a way of differentiating it from the iPhone and keeping it more in line with the other iPods.

I'm infatuated with the sleek look of the iPhone 4 and am hoping the new touch borrows its design. At the very least the chrome has to go.

I seriously hope they don't go back to the 1G design, the edges are sooo sharp and they hurt my hand (I played with one over the weekend), although you could easily fix that with a cheap case. You guys who like the 1G are nuts, its just totally uncomfortable to hold.

I think its gonna be a totally new design (for the touch), to the general public, all the iPod touches on the shelf look the same right now, so to them its all the same product. They need a new design in order to convince current touch owners to upgrade and to convince the buying public not to seek out a cheaper used model instead of what is on the shelves. It could however be based off the iPhone 4 or the iPad, but regardless it would be a new design for the touch. The public needs to see the new one on the shelf, and it has to look somewhat different in order for them to notice it.

The design will share similarities with the iPhone 4 design. It will be more boxy than curved. It will not retain the old design. I'm hoping the material used for the back won't be shiny chrome but some kind of anodized aluminum, brush metal look. Maybe like the iPad back, idk.

I did not even consider the iPad design which, as others have already stated, may be used to differentiate between iPod touch and iPhone 4. I love the iPad design so it's definitely something I look forward to!!!

I cannot wait for Apple's iPod event. :)

The easiest way to manufacture and market the iPhone and iPod touch would be to use the same shell for both. Make one a 3G + WiFi and the other one a WiFi. But that's not the Apple way.

The current curved back really sucks; but it really doesn't matter, since it'll go into a case anyway. Whether it retains the current design or takes on the iPhone 4 design; after placing it in an OtterBox Defender case, you'd never know the difference.

That's the beauty of after market accessories. They can easily overcome some of the design flaws. Bottom line - it doesn't matter what the next gen touch looks like.

It does a to a degree. I may be wrong on this, but without a redesign (likely making it thicker); there will be no back camera of a good quality. The back camera seems to be in the top three for most valued item.

Here's some speculation:

It will look like the iPad, as will the rumoured 7" iPad, and these devices will be part of the same product 'family'. The iPod Touch will be differentiated by having camera(s), Facetime, and portability. The 7" iPad will have Facetime (facing camera only, it's no good for pictures). The current large iPad will stay as-is for a while.

In other words, the iPod Classic and clickwheel format are pretty much toast; it's not about MP3 players anymore ('MP3 player' is a feature, not a thing), it's about media devices.

Not sure what will happen with the Nano and Shuffle formats. Shuffle might be a small touch-only screen?

OR: it will look like the iPhone but slimmer.

I think neither. Apple might create a whole new design for the new iPods. I just hope they get rid off the shine back. But if they do decide to make it like the iPad or iPhone 4, I hope they go with the iPhone 4 design!!!!

Why would there even be an iPod touch if all iPods had a touch screen. What would be better is a 10" iPad XL, a 7" iPad and a 3.5"iPad mini

Good job, that's exactly what I said (the 3.5" 'iPad mini' is the same as an iPod Touch, it doesn't matter what they are called) and that's why I said "these devices will be part of the same product 'family'".

Shuffle might have a touch-only screen but wouldn't be running the app-based iOS.

I agree. Though I doubt that the shuffle will have a touch screen because it will have to be so small and inexpensive, though maybe the icons for music, video and photo will be on some kind of slideshow and you just tap the screen when the one you want shows up or you use voice control to make it faster or jump to the song... I don't really know how apple can improve the iPod shuffle, but when they do, it will seem like the obvious solution.

I also don't think the shuffle will get a touch screen.

You are correct. Why would the shuffle get a touchscreen? It is so small, that it really wouldn't handle it well. Besides, the point of the shuffle is that it shuffles through songs. If you want more control over your music, get a nano.

I'm hoping on the iphone 4 look, since I have hated the ipod look ever since second gen. The paper thin chrome back is ugly in my mind. However, with a camera (or two? :)), maybe it will get thicker.

Maybe for you but I actually enjoy using my cell phone + electronics without cases. Cases ruin the aesthetic experience

To each his own. Covering up the current touch design is a vast improvement in its looks. The current design is downright ugly and not very functional. I'd like to see it get a rubberized back and edges with a slide-on hard cover to protect the display. Similar in style to that found on graphing calculators.

I'd like to see Apple use the polycarbonate from the MacBook as the main material for the iPod touch. That way the iPhone and iPod touch would have effectively switched material schemes, and perhaps the iPod touch can be different colours as well?
