I'm thinking of buying the Shure MV88+ but worried that Apple will phase out the lightning connector, bricking that piece of equipment with the new model. What do you think?

There are billions of them in circulation and billions of idevices requiring that connector - so no, you've got nothing to worry about in that regard

As mentioned, cannot see Apple changing that anytime soon. Far too many accessories in production with that connector type.

but didn't they switch from the old pre-Lightning connector, surprising everyone? And get rid of the headphone jack much the same way?

Of course Apple will phase out the Lightning connector, the question being when. They’ve already done so for the iPad. iPhone and accessories (keyboard/mouse/touchpad) still use Lightning connectors, probably for some time to come but only Apple knows.

Moving from Lightning to USB C would be a welcome change, just to eliminate the need for carrying around so many cable/adapter permutations.

I think the only people that care about this are those with the iPad Pro. I hope they never phase it out, although portless would be a nightmare for years

Mac computers do not have lightning ports. They all have USB-C. Continuing to use lightning is an inconvenience to people in the ecosystem deeper than just iPhone and AirPods.

The popularity of the iPhone is one of the reasons why Lightning is still around. It seems like Apple wants to hold out until wireless charging good enough to replace the port. They don’t care much about accessories. They see the change as a way to reinvigorate stagnant markets that currently rely on Lightning.

So yeah. I believe Apple will get rid of lightning. Not this year. Maybe not next year, but sometime in the near-ish future. How near that is, I can’t guess. Whether it will be for USB-C or all wireless i can’t guess either.

The Shure microphone you mentioned has a micro USB port on the device itself. It also comes with two cables to connect the microphone to your phone: one lightning cable to micro USB and one USB C cable to micro USB cable.

If the iPhone were to move away from lightning (unlikely) it would most likely be a move to USB C. I think either way you'll be fine with this device and it won't be obsolete just yet.

With that being said, if Apple really do decide to go ahead with one of their seriously anti-user moves of removing a physical connector from the iPhone entirely then you may be out of luck. Rumors suggest they may do this in a year or two.

The brand new iMac uses Lightning for the keyboard and mouse. The AirPods Max uses Lightning.

I don't think it's something you need to worry about.

Lightning had obvious benefits over the old 30-pin connector.

There are no obvious benefits for moving to USB-C on the iPhone, which is why it's not likely ever to happen.

I think you should be fine. I see the lightning connector solving two problems that nothings solves yet for an iPhone: (fast and reliable) charging + data, while also giving Apple money + control.

Usually in short distance, I think MagSafe could potentially give fast and reliable charging perhaps in a couple of iterations more.

On data, I would believe that something like WIFI 6E (long range) or UWB (short range) could solve that problem. I imagine that a MagSafe could have a UWB chip for data transfer for old accessories like CarPlay.

Apple will do everything in their power to keep lightning on the iphone so that they can continue to earn income from their MFI licensing fees.

The lightning port will be long gone soon on the pro models, port less is the future. 😁😍
