It seems as if the ports are holding them back, but it is hard to imagine that it will be the exact same thickness in five years. But Apple always finds a way to make stuff smaller.... What do you guys think?
 
You answered your own question.

If keeping current ports = NO.

So they would have to use different, thinner IO ports, like what they did to the iPhone from the 30 pin to a 10 pins.



Does it matter at this point? What thinner does it do to you?
