I have a sinking feeling that things are going to get ugly when the next Mac Pro is released. If Apple's concept of a "pro" laptop gets carried over to the desktop line, we'll end up with another manifestation of "Sharper Image meets Fisher Price". I hope I'm wrong.

I think at the very least we can expect the cheese grater holes to change as they did on the MBP, where they went from being larger and alternating to being smaller and aligned.

then I would more expect the Pro apps to be dropped or sold off and the Mac Pro to be discontinued.

Please tell me this isn't happening. Notwithstanding the $100 ipod customer segment, there are serious computer users who depend on a robust Mac OSX and decked-out Mac Pros to run businesses and get stuff done without having to visit the hell that is Vista.

Someone please reassure me this is never going to happen.

I can reassure you that it could possibly happen.....

why does it matter what it looks like, chances are its just gunna sit next to your desk, or under it. ur not gunna b staring at it all the time, as long as it works as good as it does now then it shouldnt b a big deal

As long as it continues to make Apple a profit it will exist. The changes and features of the new Macbook Pro do not indicate that Apple has any intention of abandoning it's pro apps and the hardware they make to complete the solution.

This is a good thread because I just had this conversation with someone about how Apple dropped 'Computer' from it's name so there's you're first hint.

Then with the advent of the iPhone and it's overwhelming success it has now shifted everything from ipods to high-end 'pro' notebooks sacrificing ports/options to make it more 'shiny' for consumers who eat that stuff up. That said I don't see it as Apple just axes their pro apps/macpro but over the next 5 years they will continue to phase out the pro market because if the iphone turns into a full-fledged pocket-mac with 'cloud computing' the future they won't need the money from the niche' pro market anymore.

Just my two cents.

Some comments come accross a bit 'naive'.

Any medium or large corporation will drop what used to be it's core business if there are new ones more juicy.

The macpro line may still be profitable, but that never was a reason for a company to still do it. It may be the 3d or 4th more profitable segment.

They may want to drop a market which shrinks (or to be more precise, that is surrounded by segments that outperforms) and refocus the research and support $$ towards what will be the next thing. (tablet or whatever).

I think Apple realized that the consumer market is soooooo much larger that pro does not need to be in their vocabulary anymore to grow. Quite the opposite.

Apple aren't in a position where they would need to consider dropping a profitable line to focus R&D spending on other areas. I doubt Steve's ego or the shareholders would let it happen anyway.
