I think no. i Phone does not needed IR blaster, so many iPhone user are do not have a knowledge about IR blaster.

If i wanted IR i'd rather have an external device that can be mounted aimed at the devices in question and talk to that via wifi or bt. That way I can control things from anywhere. Far better than IR in the device.

Semi related: I didn't even know the MacBook Pro had an IR receiver until we got an AppleTV and the remote for that caused the MacBook to play music. IR's not important.

It is funny to see people say "what is this 2004?" etc etc etc when Apple pushed IR so hard for so many years though.

I personally have no use for it but I don't care if its there. I guess my only grip would be another opening in a case that would allow debris and dust in for something I won't be using. Thats a stretch though looking for a reason to not want it at all though.

Many phones have an ir blaster, but many also never use it. Non issue

my galaxy has it

i've used it twice

and those times, it was only to test it..

many of the features the app has (tv guide ect) dont work properly where i live.. so not even that is of any use.

I wonder how wifi works, when the device is sleeping mode and e.g. tv is needed to turn on.

I have IR in my phone and used it all the time with tv/bluray/AV/cable - none of those has wifi inside.

The Ir blaster isnt what it used to be, it can now be used to control all electronics in your household including the bluetooth stereo in your car, that comes in very handy having it on your phone because its very convenient than to have to worry about multiple controllers. I had one on my previous phone and used it to control the Ac, Thermostat, 3 Tv's , Sonos and my stereo system in my car so for me it was very very useful

I had a universal remote control app for my WinMo phone years ago.

You have the receiving circuit remain on constantly. It's no different to how IR receivers work.

Like an AppleTV. It's on waiting. It's IR circuitry is also so either can turn it on. I haven't tried via Bluetooth but that's probably the same.

No iPhone has it now and it is still the number 1 selling Smartphone on the market so I would say it does not matter if it has an IR Blaster or not.

For me it will definitely fail. I will not buy one if it doesn't have IR blaster, and will buy one if it does. Same goes for water resistance. I don't see how is NFC which nobody uses, necessary and these features are not, although they are already standard in flagship phones.
I often find myself looking for remote while i hold my phone always by my side.

I don't see ir blaster or water resistance although NFC is a possibility. If you don't have an iPhone now probably won't have one in the future either.

Samsung and HTC and LG would each give their left *&#$*& to "fail" as spectacularly as the iphone 6 sales figures indicate...

I can't wait to hear the numbers, what did they speculate something like 10 million in the first weekend, and now they just started pre-orders in China and 6 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours? Just think if they offered an IR blaster they probably could have sold an extra 10 to 15 phones.

So what's the verdict on this, has the iPhone 6 launch been a failure? I know I bought 2 and I am not disappointed.

You want to gloat about the success of the 6 (why I'll never understand) and THIS is the thread you chose to dig up to do it? Wow. Slow day at the water cooler?

Estimates for China market seem to be on the order of 20 million units preordered.

I think I saw that Apple is reporting earnings on Oct 20th, so perhaps we'll learn some real figures at that time.

Yes

Yeah because I found the topic of an IR blaster being necessary for success to be funny. No water cooler here, just a coffee pot and waiting for it to brew.

Wow, that is amazing. I wonder if they will say anything at today's event even if it's just first week figures.

My wife and I love our 6's, even though we thing they are a little large for one handed use, but I am using my iPad mini way less now.

I definitely see the appeal in resurrecting these kind of prophetic threads. It would be nice to hear the OP's thoughts now that the evidence is in. Does he or she still believe the public will refuse to buy a phone without an IR blaster?

An IR blaster? Personally, I can't see myself ever using one so it wouldn't affect my choice of phone.
