Couldn't the same thing be said about the 4GB and 8GB options of the past?
Well a 16 gb is 4x the amount of a 4gb (obviously) so it makes sense that they got rid of it along with the 8, those sizes obviously weren't ample enough. An iphone is obviously more than just a phone but there are plenty of people that use it primarily as a phone so Apple offers the 16gb model for said individuals. I just don't think they would scrap the 16. It would be a poor decision IMO. Well that is unless they charge the same for the 32 as they do for the 16. :)

My point is that, at one time, the 4GB was enough for most and the best selling while the 16GB was the largest size available. As times change, technology advances, and app size grows, larger storage is required.

Considering it's now been 5 years since the initial release of the iPhone, we are far behind what Kryder's Law states what storage sizes should be.

Let them keep the 16GB... as the only option available for the 4S when the new iPhone comes out and moves onto higher storage capacities, much like the 8GB is the only option available for the iPhone 4.

No I completely understand what you are saying I'm just saying I don't think we are there yet. I don't think 16gb is too small by any means at this point in time, especially for people like me who have plenty of apps, vids and photos along with a jailbreak with plenty of tweaks and still have 8 remaining gigs. In the next 5 years? Maybe, probably.

Very interesting though, that you guys think that they will do away with the 16 by this next gen.

It's funny to discuss the future of Apple. None of us really know. We're basically projecting our own opinions about what moves they will/should make.

When 32 and 64 GB models start outselling the 16GB models then I think we will see a shift in entry point.

As it stands, bet your ass 16GB is far and away the best seller and most aren't maxing it out, so I expect things to stay pretty much the same.

The 3GS is still selling like crazy too...

The lack of card storage expandability will always be an issue for the iPhone compared to other handsets, therefore Apple will need to keep abreast of industry/competitor hardware developments. That goes for storage, NFC, etc.

So a top-end 128GB option is virtually guaranteed. Sure, they'll not sell by the millions, but they'll sell more than enough.

Storage space is like a home. No matter what you've been used to previously, when you move into a bigger house, you always seem to fill the space available to you. Even if don't mean to.

I’m guessing the price for 64 GB flash hasn’t dropped considerably since last year, because Apple doesn’t even offer that capacity in the iPhone 4.
Nothing to do with price. It was just another marketing differentiator for the 4S vs the 4.

God knows those are thin enough on the ground as it is. Siri, upgraded camera, errr....

32
64
128gb

is highly likely.
Based upon what???

Another strike against the 128 option, with Apples moving (Google is doing the same too) towards more cloud computing users, they'd rather you purchase more storage etc... which is easier for them by not offering past 64 GB.

Maybe in the future, but you'll have better luck winning the lotto then seeing a 128GB iPhone this year.

I think 64 GB is enough for the vast majority of users. I seriously doubt they will make anything larger for at least 2 more years.

For me, it's the sweet spot. It fits all of my music, and I still have enough breathing room for other stuff (apps, videos, etc...)

The only reason that the 16gb model is the best selling is because it is only $199 and a lot of people myself included can't see spending more than that for a phone. You get the phone and you realize that the software takes up another 2gb and you download one game like batman or rage hd or infinity blade and each one of those takes up another gb. If the new iPhone has the better ram and a better processor people will be able to make even better games that take up even more space. If a 32gb phone was the cheapest one available it would be the best selling one just like how the 16gb is now.

And a lot of us just laugh that Apple charges an extra $100 for 16GB of storage when a 64 GB micro SD card can be purchased for less than $100 now.

I don't think we will see a 128GB iPhone this year, but let's not exaggerate.

I am happy with 32 Gb, but I could use the 64 Gb model. I simply chose to save myself $100 because I did not need it.

If anything, I would assume they will keep the same sizes and lower the price difference between models.

Thank you captain obvious. :p It's clear that the 16gb is the most popular because it's the cheapest. If they scrapped the 16 and made 32 the lowest option then the 32 would sell more.
16gb is plenty for me and I'll be damned if I ever spend an extra $100 for 16 more gb of space.

i doubt we will see 32GB at 199 anytime soon.

why? because apple wants to keep their profit margins high, so even if the 16gb chip costs a penny to make, they will still offer the 16GB version for $199.

16gb is more than enough for the average consumer. like someone else said, no one needs thousands of songs on the go 24/7

I love this type of comment...where, just because YOU don't need or want something, you assume nobody else does.

I could easily name plenty of people who DO need their song/ video library with them or simply need more space than what it currently offered.

Hell, the average family goes on a week long vacation at least once a year... It would suck having to drag the laptop around with them just so they could free up their phone of pictures/ videos every night- if that's even an option for them.

For me music is less of an issue. I have a few games that are over 1gb in size and a bunch more that are 500mb+. High end iOS games are getting huge and 16gb isn't enough.

How many pictures do you take on vacation? Because my 16gb holds plenty of pictures. I also upload them and then delete them. Furthermore, I like to enjoy vacations not spend them taking pictures. Usually on vacations I put my phone down/away. Not everyone obsessively takes pictures or video. Those people get 16gb. And just like you said YOU know people that need thousands of songs with them, I don't have a single song on my iPhone. I have an mp3 player (that I previously owned) for that. This is why they offer 3 different sizes. And Apple loves the consumers that pay a whole lot extra for that space.

Hey I was only bringinG that up because a couple of people said it :p

64 GB is more then enough for a phone. I have around 16 with a 64GB class 10 on my Galaxy S3 and barely scratched the 35 GB mark. That's with over 300 apps, tons audio books and movies at around 800 to 1 GB each.
I can easily fill up a 64gb with just music let alone movie, video, tv shows and apps.

But do you need all your movies, videos, tv shows, and your whole library collection of music with you at all times? I guess some people would. But it doesn't seem like something that's common enough for Apple to offer a bigger option yet. I mean jesus 64gb is a lot of space.

Like I said previously, I have a 16GB. I have plenty of apps, games, photos, I'm jailbroken with a long list of tweaks and programs, and I still have 8GB remaining. I dont watch TV on my iPhone, let a lone a 2 hour movie. And I have a separate 8gb mp3 player that I've had for years that contains a majority of my most listened to music. It amazes me that people need that much stuff on their phone. I mean honestly, more power to ya, if the space is there use it... but you need MORE?!

I'll buy the biggest size available. My wife has a 16 and it's almost full with just pictures. And it's only a 4, so it's less MP than the 4S. Based on this, I can see the 16 going away. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 4S 16 GB as the low end model, with 32 and 64 in the "new" phone. I have decided my wife will move up to 32 and I will go to the biggest size they offer.

to the people claiming you need more than 64GB of space to carry around your entire music (or movie, or whatever) collection around... might i suggest an external hard drive, massive cloud storage, or something similar.
