Will the older apple display (m8149) work with a 2010 MBP?

Don't know what that number references for Apple Displays but I can't think of any Mac display except for ones from the early to mid 90's that wouldn't work with new macs, considering you have the proper display adapter for it.

There was some issue with the Mac Pro as I recall a while back because it didn't have the mini display port adapter available but I'm sure that has been resolved.

It will work. You will need a DVI to ADC adapter, however.

Edit: Rather, you will need a Mini display port to DVI adapter, and a DVI to ADC adapter.
