Probably not. but I'm hoping. Don't want to pay another $40. I suppose it all depends on how the iPad rests on the dock.

With the difference in thickness, I'd imagine the fit wouldn't be too great causing it to lean back too far and possibly putting more strain on the port

I think if you put something to increase the resting area of the dock it would work fine for the iPad 2.

It works fine. The curve of the original ipad dock back is such that it actually does come up right against the iPad 2 at a point and keeps it relatively snug. The difficulty is angling the iPad 2 to get into the connector, but it's not that hard.
