I heard rumors that the new iMacs will feature holographic 3D display and multi touch. If it's true you can ditch those gaming rig, man these will be the best "entertainment (cough) rigs" ever. Anyone know software than can hide files and partitions? (cough)

It didn't destroy gaming on the iPad.

It did destroy gaming on the iPad! Read the reviews on NOVA 3 that just came out! There's tons of people that are mad cause their 3rd gen ipads are slow in gameplay and the graphics get all out of whack. I play it on an iPad 2 and it's perfect except a couple bugs that sometimes render vehicles invisible.

----------

When they went Retina in the iPad 3, they boosted the GPU.

It's still not enough, it gets very slow when playing NOVA 3, go read the reviews. I play in an iPad 2, works fine.

There's been talk in a couple other threads which may address a few of the concurs here.

1: Increasing the resolution to 4k lowers the framerate.
Yes, though you will get some of that back. This is because you can (and should) disable antialiasing with a retina display. Since you're running at 4k, your eyes shouldn't be able to perceive aliasing artifacts. Triangles become triangles instead of pyramids, so blending are no longer necessary to fake it. There's a difference of opinion regarding just how much you'll get back (somewhere between 20% - 50%).

2: Running a game at a lower resolution will look like crap.
Games that cannot be run at 4k resolution can be run at 1k resolution (1920x1080) without any scaling or blending artifacts. This is because a single 1K pixel is a 2x2 pixel square on a 4k screen. only NPOT (non power of 2) resolutions will have scaling artifacts. A game running at 1k resolution on a 4k monitor should look the same as a game running at 1k on a 1k monitor.

Overall, any game that you play today at 1080P on a 2011 iMac 'should be' completely playable at 4k at a comparable framerate on a 2012 retina iMac. You get 20-50% back via disabling AA, you'll have a 20% faster CPU, you'll have a 30% faster GPU, etc.

1. If you disable AA on the very latest bestest single GPU from nVidia you can reach some 5760x1200 at high quality, but that's with the best single desktop GPU that just came out. We are not really expecting to get anything like that GPU in the next iMac...

2. Correct me if I'm wrong but most confirmed / corroborated rumors were of Retina display on the laptops, I didn't read any corroboration or confirmation that it was meant for the iMacs.

I've been playing nova 3 on my 3rd gen iPad just fine. No weird slow downs or anything.

There haven't been any confirmed rumors on the MBP either only very likely rumors from people with trusted sources!

what is the possibility of apple having their imacs have their own integrated GPU to handle the retina display in itself when the discreet GPU does the other work?

but then again... i have heard that intel are releasing intel integrated graphics that are supposed to support retina displays? these could be a solution for handling retina displays?

^iReally would look into this :D
and this:

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/20/ivy-bridge-to-support-ultra-high-resolution-4096x4096-screens/

looks like you aren't the only one trying to overcome this issue. :/ i would suggest catching up with news on this. but either way it seems like you would be able to get decent framerate on minecraft at a 4096x2304p resolution :D
