I'm curious about the Space Black 14 Pro having DLC. The name of the color suggests that it'll be just like the Space Black Apple Watch. I wonder if the process will be the same to arrive at this color. Anyone know?

Most of us are guessing at this point, but the stainless part is around the edges, and I'm guessing the edges will indeed have DLC. Hope I'm right.

I was wondering the same exact thing! I really hope it’s a DLC. It’s hard to tell from the videos on YouTube but it’s definitely darker. You will be able to tell the difference in person so I’m waiting for this Fridays launch. There is a chance that apple made it PVD but it would have just made sense to copy over the DLC Apple Watch finish.

One detail to keep in mind is the "Space Black" color designation on the 14 Pro is identical to the Space Black color designation of the Apple Watch Hermes Edition, a product that has already been confirmed to use DLC. I want to believe the identical naming between two products within the same release cycle means they wiil be identical in both appearance AND finishing process. Of course there's no guarantee, I'm purely speculating.

This is exactly why I was wondering about the phone. Space gray has been called space gray for a while and has been different shades.

If it was to be coated in DLC, Apple would charge extra. It is time consuming and expensive.

The aluminum iPhone 14 in space black will NOT have a DLC coating. It will be the same coating used in the past and be an anodized surface. If scratched it will show the silver aluminum color.

Huh? We are talking about the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max with stainless steel. The aluminum is on the 14 and the color is called midnight.

doesnt apple have a hotline for these questions. I’d for one like an actual answer and it’s easy to reference the watch when inquiring.

Just to throw another layer into this already highly confused conversation, DLC (diamond like carbon) coatings ARE applied with a PVD (physical vapor deposition) process. DLC is a type of coating, like TiN (titanium nitride, gold colored) or AlCrN (aluminum chromium nitride, gray colored). PVD is the process used to apply those coatings onto surfaces.

Edit: Just FYI, you can anodize aluminum (very durable) or titanium (less durable) but not steel or stainless steel. If you want colored stainless steel it needs a coating made of a different material to provide the color.

I can now confirm that the iPhone 14 pro space black does NOT have a DLC coating. The name is the same but it’s definitely a PVD coating. I saw it in person and it doesn’t match my space black stainless steel Apple Watch and link bracelet which have the DLC coating. The new space black is a darker and flatter black color. Where My space black Apple Watch finish has a slightly more metallic/grey tone in direct light and the finish has a much deeper and more premium polished finish. They also don’t feel the same in hand. My watch feels more sticky and more fingerprints transfer on the surface where as the iPhone feels a lot more slippery. If that makes any sense. I also tried rubbing a lightning connector on the space black iPhone 14 pro and it did not hold up well. With almost no effort I was able to severely scratch the finish where as my Apple Watch is almost impossible to scratch as I have tested it. After research, all colored iPhone models are using a PVD coating. The gold iPhone has a slightly stronger PVD coating than the rest due to a different process. The gold one is probably your best option for durability. The silver iPhone is bare stainless steel and can be re-polished if needed.
