Will there be a less obvious dock?

Or even a way to change the appearance of it. Either eliminate it totally or even make it "lay down" at the bottom of the screen?

There is not now, and no indications that there will be any changes.

Some kind of auto hide implementation similar to that in MacOS would be pretty cool.

What purpose does hiding the dock suit? It's not like it sits on top of an open app you are in. It's only present at the home screen.

They should remove the names of the apps, add the little running black dot and decrease the height just a little to make it match macOS.

People just don't like how it covers so much of the wallpaper. Or at least that's how I feel. iOS 4-6 was nice because it was sort of angled and only had a drop shadow. The dock only went up behind like a third of the app icon, leaving all the space between for the wallpaper to show. Now the dock goes well over the icons and covers the wallpaper, sometimes the translucency mixes the colors grossly and it just isn't pleasant to the eye. I think if the translucency was just a little less.. translucent (less heavily blurred) it would be okay.

I think a good option/setting would be to allow the user to turn off the dock background (translucency) altogether. I would like it if I had the option to turn off the dock itself, it serves no useful purpose for my needs and I could use that space as an extra row of icons.

Heck, I'd rather have Apple let us put icons anywhere on the screen. That covers wallpapers more than just a dock.

Yeah, I agree. But we all know how Apple is with giving us any sort of UI Choice... :(
Many people would like that, yes. I would like to have the option but personally I've gotten so used to the way icons are laid out and have been laid out since the beginning of iOS that anything else just looks weird to me and OCD-like obsession over how messy the screen looks kicks in lol.

They can keep the same rows/column layout. Just do away with the restriction of having to fill up each row one by one from the top. What if I just want a row of icons above the dock and that's it for one page? *cant do it*

Apple always want to build an iOS suitable for everyone to use. Or at least, everyone can use the iPhone in the same way, with a few exceptions in settings.
This can be considered as a staple of iOS, while in android, user can do a lot more customization than on iOS, which is also a staple of android.
Therefore, there is no need to allow user choosing different layout as they like as long as there are a lot more other issues waiting for Apple to fix.

I still think the SL dock looked the best. (New icons are better though)

I'm all for a total revamp of the dock, but I'm wanting a Home screen/Springboard revamp even more. It hasn't changed at all (aside from adding things like 3D Touch)

Since there isn't going to be major changes (at least for iOS 10) I think the dock should be tweaked to match iOS 10's newer look. Have it not edge to edge and bring in the rounded corners many things have received (notifications, widgets, control centre, etc.) in the newer look. Have it at least match the rest of the changes made.

Also making it match the newer iOS 10 look it would be in line with OS X/macOS Dock as well.

Here is a quick and dirty photoshop of what I think the Dock should maybe change to that would match the new iOS 10 look added in other areas.

Yeah I see where you're going. That would mean they make the dock a very white milky translucency which imo would be more obnoxious looking than it is now. If it had the same translucency as it is now but the same shape as the macOS dock, then it would be sweet.

Version 2 of my "rendering" with the Dock moved up slightly and the page dots moved below the Dock (so that it's separated like the new CC.)

Posted two quick photoshop "renderings" to illustrate what I was thinking.

Looks good man, but I think the dots need to be moved back above the dock. With them below it as they are in your render, I feel like it infers that the dock has multiple pages and is swipe-able, while the home screen is not, except in reality it's the exact opposite. Hope that made sense.

Yep! Looks good and I think it makes sense that way from a user interface point of view.

It was a good catch on your part and I agree. I didn't think about that when I made version 2. Because I had moved the Dock up (so that it was detached just like the new Control Centre) I placed them below because I couldn't see the space I had to work with, so I was worried they would have ran I to the bottom row of apps (clearly not the bottom row in my image, but the bottom row if it was a full page of apps.)
