Will there eventually be a third party display port --> thunderbolt adapter for target display mode on the 2011 iMacs, or should I just go with a refurbished 2010 iMac?

Eventually I'd like to build a gaming computer to play Battlefield 3 on the iMac via target display mode, although I can go for the better 2011 iMac and wait for the adapter if it's coming...

I don't see GPU manufacturers putting Thunderbolt on their cards. An adapter might work but it won't be as good, especially for gaming.

What Mac will you be using to play?

There are other ways to use a Mac's display.

Yeah, in my question I said I was trying to decide between the 2010 iMac (which can use the display port in as target display for other display port outputs) and the 2011 iMac (which currently can only do target display mode for other thunderbolt enabled macs, but I'm hoping will be able to do target display mode with a display port to thunderbolt adapter). If there's the possibility of a thunderbolt to display port adapter, then I'll go for the 2011 iMac, which is overall a better computer.

Exactly why I went with the 2010 version. My Alienware gaming rig looks awesome on the iMac monitor! 2012/2013 for thunderbolt ports on Windows systems if ever. Maybe by then I'll be ready for an iMac upgrade.

Cheers,
