Less then the monitor i would point out that you can use a BT mouse and keyboard. If you edit photos on iPad anyway and you just want to use word and powerpoint (pages and keynote?😛) the iPad should decently be able to carry you till September IF needed.

The only sensible thing I can advice you is to wait. Use your iPad that you've just bought for the work as your needs (what you told us) are so minimal that iPad is perfect for that. With a keyboard and mouse, iPad will be more than perfect. As you've just bought it its probably one of the latest models so you will be fine. And then in few weeks time you can get your iMac and extend the longevity you asked for as well.

I will be entering medical school in the new future and was about to get the 27 inch Imac. Obviously I have been following this for a while and wanted to wait for at least the spec bump coming this year but clearly apple is playing all types of games. I just wanted your guys feed back on if a 27 inch imac would be sufficient for me. I am getting it with the numeric keypad. 256 GB SSD and I was going to manually upgrade the ram. I was going to get the I5 3.0 GHZ. All I really do is basic studying with word and powerpoint. Every once and I while I do edit a picture but I just bought an IPAD pro for that. I need this machine to last me the next 7 years. I wanted to wait but classes start First week of August and I cant wait until september for a "maybe" release. Also my family member does work at apple so I do get a good discount on the 2019 which helps my mental on me getting a one year old machine.

The iPad Pro can certainly tie you over until the new iMac arrives.

It's not.

I always said two weeks before WWDC because of it's two weeks delay, BLM riots happened and made that week unusable.
Then it "was" at WWDC according to everyone and their mother until 24 hours before. And with ARM announced it made sense.
Then i said 30 days after WWDC wich is tomorrow.

Could we do 5th of august (or something like that and (possibly) make it roughly 30 days ahead of the iPhone event? (last two years were September 10th (Tuesday 2019) and September 12th (Wednesday 2018) wich would make it 8th or 9th in 2020.). Possibly. But not as likely as tomorrow.

Yes.

Many are getting on just fine with it. Depends on what you're doing.

'True.' Tell me when you find some. It depends greatly on our point of view.

For 9/10 tasks it hammers a Mac. Very easy to use and super smooth.

If you want to draw and paint. An iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate beats the intestines out of a Mac and a Mouse with Dinosaur Photoshop. The Mac is still a 1984 paradigm. So it's ironic that Apple are struggling to replace the 2019 model with a 2020 one.

The iPad Pro has access to a million apps. Many great ones. As it grows in power...the apps grow with it.

I love the Mac. But for many, the iPad can replace it. That's going to increase as the iPad increases in Power, iPad OS and screen size.

Depends on what you're doing.

I did some work on a '13' inch iBook and it was really cramped. Looking at a Flash (Adobe) interface was painful. 'Compact' to put is politely. And comping out blue screen backgrounds in PS was really fiddly... :/

12.9 iPad. As a single window to draw and paint. Great for Procreate. Not bad for screen size. Prefer 16/17 inch size. Even better 21/24 inch sizes. With an easel stand I can 'dock' it on.

Still think it's a bit small for general interfaces in the Mac tradition. But it's not trying to be a 'Mac' per se. Many apps have simplified to allow the screen to breath on the iPad. It's a different interface which is 'touch' 1st and kb/mouse 2nd and 3rd. A different paradigm.

Good news is around the corner. (A long, winding one...)

September is a killer month.

Those are the big hitters there.

Honestly, if it's not this week... it might be the first week of august (but why wait? especially if it's not a redesign? why put "the old one" out after oozing over your climate footprint report?)... i don't see September at all. Would i take it instead of waiting? Yeah. But there are so so many iOS ecosystem devices rumored for that event. - At that point i see early October, "back to mac" event with both iMac, a new 16 inch MBP and the BigSur release.

I think they released Mac Computers at the iPhone event before, but if it is anything more than a specs bump why would they hide it in all the news that come with the iPhone Lineup? And if it is just a specs bump, why wait for an event?

It's a bit like saying can a Mac truly replace an iPad. They're slightly different.

Adding drawing to the already expensive iMac can set you back quite a bit for a Wacom.

At this moment in time I view them as complimentary devices and will eventually use them as such.

But I could get plenty of work done on an iPad and not miss the Mac at all.

For 9/10 tasks the Mac wouldn't have to be used.

I view the iPad as a true computing evolution of the Mac. Son of Mac. It's where it's going....if we look at the spacing in Big Sur. Where the Mac is taking lessons learned from iPad. And similarly iPad has borrowed from Mac. They're fundamentally the same device separated with screen size and...touch.

Be very happy with a 32 inch iPad.

I don't think I can do it. I keep my Macs for 5-7 years minimum. The design while adequate, has grown old on me and the fat bezel would drive me nuts in the first few weeks let alone years.

I'm only on board any new iMac train, if there's an new form factor.

I Would buy an intel mac without a redesign. It would me my first IMAC so anything would be impresive. Plus with what I do I wouldnt really benefit from the "Increases" that AS would provide. I actually never knew what bezels were until I came across you guys.

I will gladly buy a intel iMac because i rely on some of it's functions (namely bootcamp, or even on OSX god knows what will happen to Steam).

Will try **** with you via "this new feature is only avalible on ARM Macs because PANTS!", probably. To a degree they already do with iPad App Support. (Keep in mind. SideCar only works on Macs and iPads as new as possible (Apple Fanboi "JUST CANT BE DON!!!") while other companies offer largely the same service via Apps still, and did way before sidecar existed...)
But what is important is that you **** works. And i doubt that Adobe, for example, will stop selling CC to it's Intel MacOS customers because they won't run head over heels to buy not only a new iMac but also a new MacBook for 8.000-10.000€ total ASAP? Certainly not.
Were i see some risk might be Apples Apps. Some FinalCut and Audition fears might arise. But no way they are phasing these programs out for Macs released now before 2025. xCode maybe sooner since it relies so much on ARM anyway. But than again they just released Metal Tools for Windows, why kick xCode to the trash... so that might be save as well.

Exactly my position as well. A redesign would be cool but I need a new machine at the moment. I had plans of trying to hold off until Apple Silicon but doing a quick re-eval I realised that I'd rather have a machine now (that I can maybe even sell down the line) than rely on this terrible work laptop for a year (as my Mac has died).

I will probably switch on MacBook first since my MacBook is 2015 (and honestly due to retina some stuff runs horrible, my 2012 iMac handles Lightroom classic so much better with the same RAW files it is totally crazy)... so if apple brings back ports OR the tech world manages to transition to a level were you don't need to cary around dongles to make your mobile computer work with friends, family and work associates that might be a legit option.
I am not even saying having one or two of these new ports is bad, i hear great things about external SSDs like Samsung's T5/T7... but, like, it's... been... almost four years they forced these ports on their customers and they are largely not used by the average consumer... there is being ahead of your time and there is just being silly and stubborn (butterfly keyboard anyone?). And than think of something as horrendous as the 12 inch MacBook on top of all of that. The MacBook line is due for some real hard work before i buy a new one. But as for my personal switch to ARM it WOULD BE the first in line way before iMac.

For those that need a working iMac now, the 2019 would 'do' the job. The pending Intel iMac from this (2020!) year 😛 it will be 'fine' for those that need an Intel iMac with relatively contemporary performance to warrant the asking price. Due? 'Very, very soon.' Late(?) July, Aug, Sep, Oct'...

But we know Apple will hammer and hose (!) those buyers with the usual 'remorse' tricks.

1. New design for ARM.
2. A 24 inch ARM that beats the pants off the 27 Intel iMac.
3. OS optimisations, software and performance 'only' available for ARM 24 iMac. (eg. A massive one is iOS compatibility.) Or eg. 3x4k streams without breaking a sweat. Actual gaming performance from a gpu...etc.
4. Seeing the review sites with review machines where they fawn over the ARM iMac but guilt the Intel iMac deniers.
5. 50-100% mOAR performance. More CoRE PHWoAR!!!!
6. Release the ARM 24 iMac on the heels of the Intel iMac aging the machine dramatically for the initial burst of buyers.

Software support for Intel Macs in 5 years, yes, sure.

Hardware wise? Apple shipped its last PPC Mac in October 2005, just 9 months after announcing the transition to Intel in January of that same year.
