I am guessing 8k was just too much, for the Pro XDR Display? 6K seems an odd step, given the slow rise of 8K.
I was disappointed it wasn't 8k to be honest.
Seemed like a half step.
CWallace is good with display stuff or rather, he knows what he wants from displays.
Me. I don't really see the point of going from 5k to 6k. Or to make that big a deal about the iMac getting it.
Going from my res' on my late 2012 iMac (it shipped to me in 2013...) to the 2014's 5k was a huge leap. Or would have been, had I bought one.
😛
And going from 5k to 8k would be more significant to me.
The Dell is just over £3k in monies. I remember when Apple's 22(?) inch studio display was £2k. That seems tiny now. Just like the 21 inch iMac.
If Apple had a range of displays
4k. £500.
5k. £1000.
8k. £2000.
I'd be happy with that choice.
I've seen a few 8k reviews on line. Needing 3 titans or some such to run the games with smooth framerates. Or dual cable set ups.
Been to PC World to see 8k tvs. The level of detail is so super fine.
This is the area I'd like to see Apple pushing. Online downloads are just about getting down to 4k. Mainstream tv isn't doing 4k.
But for content creators...I'd like to see Apple catering for 8k.
I wouldn't say no to a 6k 32 inch (or a 32k...) iMac.
What was exciting was that Apple's A12z chip in the 'beta' AS Mac Mini was pushing that 32 inch XDR no problem. Which suggests a AS Mini and XDR solution over something like an iMac Pro...could be in the works.
But Apple. Ridiculous they don't have sub £5.5k display options for consumers. Truly disgusting.

At this point, I am 100% certain a simple spec bump with custom 95w 10th gen parts are coming. Given clock speeds and power don't scale in a linear fashion. You can lose a small amount of speed dropping from 125w to 95w. Whether Intel's 95w is real world 95w is another matter.
Yeah...it seems they're waiting for the 95w options to drop.
You can gain a nice thermal chunk by just a small amount of speed down clock.
And those custom 95w parts is part of the hold up. ie. Shipping in volume.
There's imminent cpu releases (allegedly) on Monday...and there is an Intel event on Sep 2.
So that puts the iMac between those dates, I'd guess.
There's plenty of gpu options out there for the iMac and have been for the last year. eg. the 'desktop clocks' of the GPUs in the Macbook Pro, perhaps. And a down clocked 5700XT could be BTO'd even without the rev1 launch in Sept/Oct by AMD.
