I've been hoping for this since Day 1. I think though, we're more likely to see something like the Moto X's Active Display, where it only turns on a few pixels to show a notification. Though, you do have to move the phone to get this to display, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Now, if I could just get the damn thing to work when I have the phone down on it's back! I do the opposite of you and pretty much never lay my phone down on the front. I'd much rather have the back scratched up if anything has to scratch then have the glass scratched because it was lying face down. Just me though.

I hear you. The leather case has a mall lip so that the glass doesn't touch the surface. I'm also rocking AppleCare+ too. Laying it down on its face is mostly a habit due to privacy. Sitting in meetings or something and messages popping up for all in the nearby vicinity to view kinda put me on that path. Oh and yea I know you can alter settings for what shows up on the lock screen, but I'm good with how I'm rolling with it.

My wife puts it face down too for the same reasons I guess.

I don't know. My life's pretty boring so if someone wants to scope that I got another junk email about a pipe fitting catalog I'm just not too upset about that. My wife is also a privacy freak so I'd never get anything on my lockscreen that would even be remotely embarrassing.

But I totally get you on that. Different for everyone.

OP,

Yeah, I loved my Palm Pre with its softly pulsing multi-colored notification light.

You could immediately tell from across the room if it was worthwhile to go check what had happened.

As for the person who has to put their phone face down so others can't see your notifications, that's why people love smartwatches :)

I generally do the same. That is why I find the notification light handy though.

In a useless meeting that we have way to often if my phone is face up people next to me can read my text and other notifications. But I keep it on silent (because vibrate on a desk/table is loud) so I don't know if I have a notification. Using the flash is out of the question, everyone would freak when that goes off especially if the lights are dim for a projection.

Nice to have the notification light on, screen off, phone completely silent. That way I'd get a very subtle no distracting LED pulse. Meanwhile no one can read the notification because the screen is off.

To me its win win. If you like it great, use it. If you don't like it great, turn it off. Saying it shouldn't be implemented seems kind of selfish, not that anyone is really saying that.

I personally hate the led notification option, it lights up the whole room when it flashes in the dark, I just want a light glow of the home button (which i'm sure is what pretty much everyone wants)
And if you are in public and use your phone and get a notification that comes in people will be thinking you are taking a bunch of photos all over the place...might not be a thing you want people thinking in a lot of places, especially if you are getting a lot of notifications too.

I have a Moto X and absolutely love the active display. For me, it is one of those features that is hard to live without once I've used it.

And no, you don't have to move the phone for the active display show the notification. It is automatic. Once you receive an email, sms, voice msg, missed call or notification from an app etc. it automatically slowly pulses the display. When there are no notifications to display it will show you the time when the phone is moved. Also pretty handy.

My old flip phone had one as did my BlackBerry Storm, but I don't really mind that my iPhone 5 doesn't. I'm a student, so my phone is usually in my pocket unless it's in my hand during the day.

The only reason why I moved from the iPhone to the BlackBerry Bold (getting the q10 soon) is because of the notification light. Me being a student, I can't turn my phone on at certain times but seeing the notification light let's me know what message I got from where because they're customizable. Granted, I also have an iPod Touch to. Help make up for apps, but if Apple releases A notification light for the iPhoines and maybe even the iPod Touches, I will consider this and may move back.

Having to pick my phone up each and every time I leave my desk and then come back to see if there is a message is a waste of time to me. Knowing I have a message and what kind by looking at a notification light is a time saver, allowing me to determine if I want to pick the phone up or not.

It's not difficult to press the home button and look at your lockscreen. I seriously doubt you are so pressed for time that you can't spare five seconds to press a button. If you are, perhaps you should simply keep your phone on your person at all times, so that you are notified at the point of notification.

So you would not like a notification light? Sure he can do all those things but we are talking about making things we already can do more convenient. Don't you get it?

Unfortunately at the moment I'm on a Galaxy SIII because my iphone 5 got stolen NYE in 2012, and this is what ATT gave me for free when I threatened to leave (was trying to get a reduced price on the iPhone).

One of the very few things that I absolutely love about this phone is the front notification light, and how it has different colors that can be assigned to different things (different colors for emails vs texts, and customizable colors for texts from certain people, etc.).

This is something that I really, really wish Apple would add to their phones. I feel like it's such a basic feature now on current smartphones and it's a shame they don't have it yet.

Also, please don't say that the iPhone already has one...the camera flash as a notification light is such a caveman-like way to provide a notification

Your 100 % RIGHT
This colored light is amazing :)
and other samsung stuff
like scroll with eye and control without touching the screen
:D IT IS JUST ROCK :D
I am using apple devices only because good quality apps and games
Look to samsung galaxy note 3 , it is absolutely better than iPhone

No it's not. It's also not difficult to drive a car with a manual transmission either. But most people seem to prefer the automatic transmission. Not because manual is difficult (although it is for some) but because the automatic transmission does the shifting for them.

Same concept.

It's not difficult to walk up to your TV and change the channel or volume when you need to. People can certainly spare the little time it would take to do that. And if you really need to change the channel so much or change the volume a lot you can just stand directly next to the TV all the time perhaps. Clearly there's no need for something like remote controls as it's not difficult to live without them.

The notification light on my old blackberry was the single most useful feature. It is a passive way of the phone notifying you there is an alert that you have requested to be notified about. Pressing the home screen button is annoying just to check messages.

My lock screen is devoid of notifications for privacy however I have set the notification to vibrate for certain alerts. It's not as good as a tri color notification led.

No. It's a tacky, useless feature - which seem to be prevalent on the Android ecosystem.

(IMO)

I would like to see a glow around the outside of the Home Button for notifications.
I think it would look pretty sweet too.

The most tasteful way of implementing something like this, yes. I remember when we first saw leaks of the iPhone 5s and people thought the TouchID ring may be illuminated. It was a nice idea.

Its something I want as well. I had the flash "notification" option turned on but had to turn it off after a couple of days. Way too harsh. I find myself wanting too many things that my iPhone just does not have lately.

Its going to be embarrassing when Apple decides to include this in a few years and fanboys rejoice like its some amazing new feature when everyone else has had it since the beginning of time

I wasn't aware using a phone was like driving a 2000 kg metal box, lol.

I think this is probably the first valid reason for a notification light that I've been given so far.

People need justifiable valid reasons for something like this--at least justifiable to someone else? Seems like it's enough to justify the usefulness to themselves, without a care as to what someone else might think about it.

Do remote controls provide valid justifiable reasons as they are there simply for convenience and nothing more? Yet they appear to be pretty much the accepted standard for decades now.
