Opinions differ on this at work but should this work?

If I buy the latest 27" Imac (core I5 probably) will I able to use it as a monitor to watch blu ray movies (original discs) from an external player?

Just to clarify the connection will be Panasonic Blu ray player connected by Hdmi to a Dr. Bott or Kanex converter (Hdmi-Display port) into the Imac via the display port connection.

Using original blu ray discs would there be any HDCP compliance issues to this proposed set-up?

Searching online there appears to be a number of issues dual booting into Windows (drivers etc) to watch blu ray movies, hopefully the above solution will not encounter these?

    Thanks in advance!

My understanding is that, yes, it's possible. But they'll run at 720p, and you won't want to sit too close to the screen...

Dr bott will handle it. The image will be 720p.

If you don't mind not having the menus, you can use a USB2 Blu-ray ROM drive and Make MKV to play the discs using VLC.

1080p and Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1, depending on what's encoded on the disc. You won't get subtitles, either. It's not the ideal solution, but it does work.

Thanks for the replies guys, although it would have been nice to see a reply by somebody who uses a similar setup.
There is still a nagging doubt whether the Imac will do the 'hand shake' with the external player and play an original blu ray disc.
Just to confirm, is the Imac HDCP compatible and I am sure I read there might be an issue with display port not processing the 'digital rights management' from hdmi preventing disc playback?
I am aware the playback will be 720 and not 1080, damn Apple typically making things difficult when it should be easy

I have a spare blu ray player and would rather use that than buy a blu ray drive at the moment, but thanks for the suggestion.
