iPhone X didn't release until November, and the iUP requires 12 months of payments before you can upgrade.

Will those who waited for the X be able to order a new iPhone when they are presumably released in September, or not?

I would guess it is like upgrading any other time... if it is before 12 months you have to pay the balance to 12 months
I got my 7 Plus on the IUP late and got my X earlier and had to pay a bit for it to cover the 12 months

Hmmm... but I also had to make two extra payments on my iPhone 7 because the X wasn't ready for launch...

Seems a little unfair for a program that's supposed to let you just pay monthly and get the latest iPhone every year when it comes out.

I never get the new phone right at launch for this exact reason. I start my IUP in mid-December so I pay 12 months and then get the new phone. I could care less if I get it when it launches

Eh what? You didn’t make 2 extra payments as the contract is for 20 months.
If you get a phone in November’17 then get the new one in November’18 then another in November’19 and so on then that’s a new phone every year isn’t it??

And it’s 11 months not 12

And you used it for those 2 months. No free rides. In the IUP you CAN upgrade after 12 months assuming Apple has a phone you want to upgrade to.

Yes, as long as you make the 12th payment. My understanding is usually after 6th month or so you are eligible and that you'll just make 6 payments at check out when you order the next one. I paid the 12th payment when the 8 Plus came out even though I started the iUP in October 2016.

If the successor to the X comes out in September I bet that Apple will have some special upgrade plan so that you can get it right away. Remember, they want to huge launch sales.

Whenever you get the phone, it just starts the clock ticking on another 2 year cycle of monthly payments

I don't see why people pigeon-hole themselves into a program like this, when you can...

1) Go through the carrier and pay 50% off (or all) of the phone at any time. No need to go through Citizens and wait for all the red tape to clear.

2) Pay in full and sell any time you like.
