I never get the new phone right at launch for this exact reason. I start my IUP in mid-December so I pay 12 months and then get the new phone. I could care less if I get it when it launchesHmmm... but I also had to make two extra payments on my iPhone 7 because the X wasn't ready for launch...
Seems a little unfair for a program that's supposed to let you just pay monthly and get the latest iPhone every year when it comes out.

And you used it for those 2 months. No free rides. In the IUP you CAN upgrade after 12 months assuming Apple has a phone you want to upgrade to.Hmmm... but I also had to make two extra payments on my iPhone 7 because the X wasn't ready for launch...

Yes, as long as you make the 12th payment. My understanding is usually after 6th month or so you are eligible and that you'll just make 6 payments at check out when you order the next one. I paid the 12th payment when the 8 Plus came out even though I started the iUP in October 2016.iPhone X didn't release until November, and the iUP requires 12 months of payments before you can upgrade.
Will those who waited for the X be able to order a new iPhone when they are presumably released in September, or not?
