I have 20 GB left to go on a Time Machine backup but do not intend on staying awake for the whole time... so if I set my computer to sleep in an hour and the Time Machine is still going, will it go to sleep and interrupt the backup? Or will it wait until the backup is finished, then go to sleep?

Time Machine stops the backup if the Mac goes to sleep. Time Machine does not prevent sleep however nothing will be damaged if the backup is interrupted. TM will just resume backup after you wake the Mac back up.
