Consider that the first iPhone started with 4 GB and that current models can have up to 32x that amount. It's inevitable that a future model will have 256 GB, and it's inevitable that several years later we will think that even that was tiny.

I understand your comment completely, but that isnt my comment. I said, why do we need? Not will it.
How do people have 100gb of music on their phones? why? Someone posted they will never hear all of it before someone dies. I've had 16gb for the last 4-5years, I don't speak for everyone, but in my mind. How the heck can someone just want the max data?

you give them 100gb or 1tb they will shove anything and everything on it. I know things get bigger apps get bigger, downloads get bigger. but c,mon!. at some point people have to get tired of scrolling through things, or thousands of photos.

I don't think its bad, I just think its crazy lol

Some people keep their music collection on their phones so it can be listened to anywhere and not have to worry about whether there's wi-fi or using precious cellular data.

do you think Apple will eventually make one? Just curious on ideas. Not even sure if a 256 chip exists.

Don't think so since we have cloud service now. Plus 256mb going to be very expensive. Also subscription based services give companies more advantage than the physical device.

The cloud is not a reliable substitute for having the data stored locally. Not everyone is within range of wi-fi all the time.. And some wi-fi really sucks. I try to minimize use of cellular data. Streaming stuff on cellular can burn thru your allotment really quick.

The people who bought a 128gb iPhone know why they bought one. I summarize my rational by saying "I plan to do more with my phone than I ever have before and nothing I can control will stop me". I think it's about maximizing opportunity in the easiest way possible (by ensuring you have the most jigawatts ) For me..I'm opting for the 128gb because I plan to record a lot of 4K videos and use iMovie on the iPhone to create lengthy projects. Audio, video, pictures.

128gb at this point in media technology seems to be about right in giving you a couple years of future proofing storage needs. As long as we have sub 100Mbps down and upload rates with with limited data plans and data throttling from carriers Phone capacities will increase. Long term(10-15 yrs)I can see a "connected world" cloud based eco systems where 8k and 11k video records at 100s of Mbps directly to cloud storage. By then I can imagine phones would have 256gb/512gb/1tb+ variants to compete.

I currently have. 128GB with my entire 80GB music library on it, around 32 days of continuous playing... I'm not saying that I'll listen to all of it but I have a wide taste and use it a lot, I want to know that I can listen to what I want and when I want to. I'm not going to sync everyday to suit my mood and then change my mind later anyway.

Some people may love taking a lot of videos on their phone, with 4K and even 1080p@60fps to some extent, space is going to disappear fast. Sure they could move them to their computer and wipe their phone clean but why should they have to? Maybe they'll want to watch them on the go again sometime.

More to the original subject; I'm sure 256GB phones will be normal within a few years and 1TB phones will be considered small within our lifetime. It's just a case of waiting... Will there be a 256GB model next year? No.

Depending on the cloud maybe a solution for people in big cities, college towns with constant and widespread connectivity. And if going all-cloud is a challenge for a large swathe of the population in the US, Apple would stand no chance in the major emerging markets in the East and Latin America.

No, not ever. Not even in 100 years when we have holographic displays that can display in complete realistic display and need terabytes of storage for the texture maps. Nobody will ever need more than 128 gigs of storage, dontcha know.

256GB will come first in the iPad. Then 6-12 months later the iPhone will get it. I assume we'll see Apple offer 32, 128, and 256.

May I ask... What do you do on your devices that you need that much of onboard memory?

My iPhone is still 16Gb. I agree that it's little too tight amount of storage, but easily manageable with cloud storage.

My iPad is 64Gb and I have used approximately 40% of the space so I still have loads of storage left.

My Mac, yes a Mac which I use to do serious stuff with has 256Gb of storage and I think I will never get even close to filling it completely.

From my personal point of view it's basically impossible to fill 256Gb or even 128Gb device. How do you do this? Seriously? It's 2015. We have cloud services and streaming services. You can download your favorite songs and movies locally and stream everything else. Having your whole library locally isn't an excuse. Thats just waste of space.

And what about when we can't stream everything else? Not everybody lives in a city, I live in a medium size town that is still waiting for 4G connection, 3G is the best we get at the moment and that's not particularly fast on the outskirts of the town. Then as soon as you leave the town to drive towards the city, there is no signal at all and streaming is impossible. But then what happens if there's a complete outage for whatever reason, something out of our hands?

Sure, not being able to stream music is not the end of the world but it's easy enough to avoid if you're happy to pay for a larger storage.

I'm thinking 256 will be out for iPhone 8. How long until we got the 128gb. Only with the 6

Two words: photos and videos

I like to sync my entire Aperture library on my iPhone (add 60GB) and 3 playlists (add 2GB), I have around 100 apps (add 10GB) then fast forward 6 months from today - my camera roll is full with 4k video, 12mp photos & live photos.

So yeah, 256GB will be nice.

I'm not feeling the cloud, yet.
I have 50GB on iCloud Drive, 40GB on Copy, 10GB on Dropbox and 20GB on Orange Cloud.

iPhone 7-32/64/128
iPad pro 2 - 64/128
iPhone 7s -32/64/128
iPad pro 3-64/256
iPhone 8 -32/64/128
iPhone 8s -32/64/256

No evidence just seems reasonable. I think far far fewer people would buy 256gb that currently buy 128.

More reasonable assumption as stated above would be for them to go back to 2 storage sizes and differentiate price on something else. Or maybe have a $150 between the two storage sizes but go 32gb->128gb.

Apple will never offer 32 and 64 in the same lineup. It'll cannibalize sales of the 64. Only way they offer 32 as a base is if they go to 32/128/256 offerings.

Well... I live in medium size town too with mediocre connections. In the town centre there is 4G but mostly 3G and even Edge.

I have around 250 songs downloaded locally and it takes around 2Gb of space. 250 songs isn't enough when your connection isn't good enough for streaming? I think it most certainly is more than enough.

I went over that in my first post... why should I settle for an emergency playlist when I can have everything faultlessly? I don't mind paying for the 128GB to have this luxury. Not to mention, streaming music makes a considerably bigger dent in battery than simply playing from the flash storage.

yes, it is 2015, and people still refer to storage as memory :)

I don't think lesser people will buy 256. Most of my friends who have the 16gb all went to 64. And some who had 64 went to 128. That was in the span of two or three years. Trust people who need the space probably aren't lurking forums. They are probably photo fanatics.

Yeah. I see your point.

However. Even if I would have 128Gb iPhone with approximately 117Gb of usable space. If I filled it completely with music I would still have only ~15K songs locally. So you need that many songs available all the times? I doubt it. Realistically, if you have only your favorite playlists and albums locally let's say 250-1000 songs. That would still take only 2-6Gb of storage and you would still have 36 million songs available to stream when you got the connection. Now... How do you fill the 128Gb iPhone? I understand that there are special ocassions where you may need that much space but 95% of us don't need that. I guess most people claiming that they "need" 128Gb are just not up with the times.

My next iPhone will be 64Gb most certainly. But it feels useless since I will never be able to fill it up. 32Gb would be reasonable but unfortunately such option is not available.

It's not really about music for me honestly. I have Apple Music and stream all of my songs. Still in the process of learning to create playlists and moving things over from Spotify. I had Spotify but loved the integration of AM and while the interface is clunky, I believe it will improve greatly. It has to.

I use storage mostly for photos and videos. I am a photographer and like to have all my photos I have ever taken on my phone, along with my videos. It's just personal preference. I don't like syncing and then removing them. I enjoy being able to go back and look at places I have been, things I've seen and people I used to know.

I have 200gb's of iCloud storage and I am going to bump that to 1TB here shortly. I will also have a TM backup and then an online backup elsewhere for my PC stuff (have over 120gigs of photos on there).
