...or are they officially gone forever?

This is a huge deal breaker for both my wife and I who regularly use USB devices on a daily basis. I'd like to upgrade our 2012 13" MacBook Air, but I'm not interested in having to use the silly USB-C dongles for accessories.

Yep, gone forever! Buy a 2015 MBP. It's still a great computer. I bought one a month ago and couldn't be happier.

Mostly thumb drives (SanDisk Ultra Fit which barely protrude, and thus stay on 24/7) and various USB charging cables. I still think it's a hassle (and added expense) to buy and carry multiple adapters/cables/dongles.

Oh well, I guess I'll wait to upgrade for now...
What devices do you charge? There are USB-C to Micro-USB and Lighting cables now (the latter is available from Apple). I have seen some USB-C flash drives, but so far I haven't seen any low-profile versions.

Think of cables as a one-time investment. Eventually you'll need to buy the cables since more devices will be USB-C. And Apple has temporarily reduced the price (I think they may make them permanent, but there is no guarantee of that). The other advantage is that you'll be able to use reputable third party charging cables, external batteries, etc. with the move to USB-C.
