www.lifeproof.com I'm on the pre-order list. On when I need protection, off when I don't. Even if they made a waterproof phone, you'd still need drop protection. This does both for not much more bulk.

it is. golden shellback is a waterproofing system that adds ZERO bulk and waterproofs any device you have. no case, pouch, nothing.

For that to work everything would have to be covered with it. The phone would have to be disassembled and each part done. Also one article I read about the guy demonstrating a blackberry and dell laptop said the laptop was coated on the inside also.

i don't think waterproofing is a highly demanded feature. I'd rather they spend that money on other things. Like people have said, If you really need it, there are places that will make it waterproof for you

We used to custom order devices that were ruggedized, including being shock, water and dust proof. Waterproofing adds the need for seals and special ports, and is time consuming to build and test. Read: very expensive.

Making a water resistant device is easier, although usually there's a trade-off somewhere. The new Android based Casio G'zOne Commando is an example, being larger and heavier than most phones.

Certainly an all touchscreen device just begs to be water resistant. The trouble of course are the buttons and ports. The iPhone is unusual in that its moisture sensors are right at the outside ports. Other phone makers put them deep inside, behind the battery.

One thing all of you are forgetting that almost all manufacturers do. It's called
Built In Obsolescence

Meaning that your device will fail eventually within a time frame. This is another avenue of revenue for them.

You want a almost indestructible device? Great. But why would any manufacturer do that? They want you to buy them, and buy more of them. If they don't fail, you'd only buy one. Less profit for them.

If you really need a phone thats waterproof, they're either out there or you can have it waterproofed. But thats a specialty type item. In general, the population of the world does not need that option. So why spend the money to do it unless its called for?

I just bought a waterproof digital camera and I love it. Seems to me, that making a waterproof iPhone wouldn't be that hard. Only thing is, all that lost money on people buying new iPhones after they dropped the old one in the toilet.

Good question! I can't tell you how many times i've had to make a call or read my email under water. Although using the phone in the shower would be nice! ;)

are you complaining about a waterproof device with no case? it's a service they provide. if you need it, they can do it for you. it's not like they send you a kit and you do it in your crazy scientist lab.

Oh I love all the arm chair engineers who think they know how something like water proofing works.

no matter if it is easy or not, the one driver factor that any company looks at is will it make them or loose them money.

At this point, millions of people are going to buy the iphone waterproof or not and adding that feature would add money the R&D and manufacturing that a miniscule amount of people would care about. so what would be the point. NONE!!!!

also, there are 2 ways to do this. either coat everything with a non permiable rosin like material so that the water never touches the components, or use alot of seals and create a vaccume inside the housing to expand the seals into all creaveses.

the 1st one would make it impossible for them to refurbish bad components on faulty boards to be used as service replacements. and the 2nd one would be costly to implement and most likely mean an increase in size to accomodate the seals and the vaccum port.

Where did I say I was complaining, the way I read it someones post they thought you just sprayed it on...

They aren't making much money off of that judging by all the stories of Geniuses giving away free replacements. :p

That's great! Thank you for the link.

Aftermarket to the rescue. I doubt Apple (or any vendor) can provide this level of protection and only bump the price US$69. I suppose you could talk about the varying degrees of water resistance. IPX-4 might be overkill.

They will make a waterproof phone as soon as humans evolve to be able to talk under water.
