Will we see a Macbook with eSim Support (or even DualeSim)?​

What I never undertsood is why and iPad comes with eSim suppor tbut the macbook does not? tethering form my iPhone to my mac works, but why the mac cannot have an esim itself. Especially with growing 5g coevagrae and unlimited cheap mobile data.

Any rumours or thoughts on that? I hope this could be real in 1-3 years. It would be awesome, just to go out with your macbook and even receive mobile calls with it etc, even though when your iPhone istn there.

I think it‘s more an issue with carriers than anything else. Apple probably wants carriers to agree to similar terms that they agreed to with respect to ipads, but carriers are worried that data usage will be much higher. I think it will happen someday, though.

I get you, I never thought about the carriers and the data usage. Some people even said this si the same reason why we cannot have icloud ios backups over mobile data, because apple wants to decrease data usage in mobile data. I hope 5g (and technlogoies onbwards) will solve this issue in the next 5 years?

Could you explaing "their own cellular modems" more? What will they do?

Maybe. IIRC a lot of workstation laptops in the early 2010's had SIM card slots but I don't know of any these days. I think if Apple was to add cellular to a Mac it would probably go through an external device like a dongle or iPhone. 5G would be a good addition to the upcoming 14" MBP (and the 16") as a lot of people (eg: freelancers and travellers) could make use of cellular networking.

I think so too, just for the simple fct, that the features between the ipad, ios and mac and merging and 5g is growing.

Apple bought the part of Intel that made their cellular modems. For now Qualcomm make the best modems, but I have no doubt Apple will match them in a few years. Then they won't have to pay the extra license for neither phones, iPads or computers and will likely add them.

I'd guess that Apple thinks there's simply not enough demand for stand-alone cellular capability to make it worth adding. Particularly when there's already wifi at the majority of places that people would use their laptop. And with iCloud+ / Private Relay, that public wifi becomes much more secure.

So while Apple *could* do this, their direction seems much more oriented towards leveraging the user's phone for connectivity.

Cellular capability is available on certain Lenovo models. Don't know about HP or Dell.

As you note though, it seems Apple is more likely to continue a leverage-the-phone paradigm than include cellular capabilities in the laptop.
