Any chance we will get an iPad Pro update this year to get the new Bionic chip so its now more future proof etc. Or do we need to wait for april or so event?
    What do you guys think?
I always wonder why iPhone gets the fastest chips first and then we have to wait for iPad to get it later. Surely, iPad needs it more and can utilize the power better than a phone.

A10X on the iPP is the same 10 nm architecture as A11 on the iPhone. While iPhone's A11 "looks" faster on benchmark, the A10X has much more graphics power than A11. A11 isn't even capable of driving the display to 120 Hz.

iPhone is a product that gives recognition and fame to Apple. iPhone is Apple's Flagship Product. It always has been the first to receive design changes and hardware changes.

The iPad line was refreshed in April.

The earliest -possible- update will be 2nd Q of 2018. And that's even a reach.

iPhones are Apple's main business. It will always get new CPUs there first .

Yes, they were but with A10X so it would be awesome to get A11X soon. iPad Pro can actually use that power whereas iPhone is just marketing promotion. :)
Ok, I guess I'll have to wait and see for April or so. :)

What would require the extra power that you cannot do with the current iPad Pro? I mean yes a faster chip is always god, but the current iPad Pro is already a beast!

It's already been talked about around many articles that we have reached a point where iOS simply doesn't make much use of the processors other than AR and the cameras. Which is fine. But most apps on iPad come nowhere near close to taxing the processor to the max. Everything is fast enough which is why the processors are starting to be specifically used for purposes like AR, face ID, etc. Things that can be offloaded to other cores while not impacting performance in other areas.

Will we see an ipad pro update IN a year? Yes. This year? No. We already had an ipad pro update in 2017. Next one will be Spring/Summer of 2018.

They won’t have even completed the A11X to put in an iPad refresh yet, likely started ramping up its development once they had the core designs down for the regular A11 and they’ll likely still be testing, tweaking and tuning it at the moment to deliver all that power you expect it to have ;) and that is of course not to mention developing the graphics part which will be in a different league to the regular A11 and for which there is no precedent as the A10X uses licensed power VR designs...

Actually, the ipad 2 received the A5 chip before the iPhone did

    no way,

always possible since apple is now completely unpredictable with being weird, and since iPad3 to 4 happened same year but this is different.

the 10.5/12.9 with ProMotion are good to go for a while, especially with the iPad version iOS 11

I agree, but iOS 11 needs improvement, my 2017 12.9 pro is a little laggy, it could be a beast (it was in iOS 10) but the os needs to mature a bit.

Not always, the iPhone usually got better cameras and some small features, but in 2013-2015 the iPad was given a better or same gen processor due to it being released after or close to the iPhone.

I want A11x or A12x 2.8Ghz, UHD or close OLED at 500PPI, 1000 Nits+ brightness, 8GB RAM, even louder speakers (close to Atmos type quality,) true HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, have 12.9” or 13” screen by making the bezels smaller like iPhone 10. Also they need to get rid of home button and have face ID (or do iPhone 8 type home button.)
Also an Apple Pencil 2 that is even faster than what we have now.

    *simple wants. ;) jk

No, I don't think we'll see any more updates from Apple. They're focusing on getting out the iPhone X, and we're so close to the holiday shopping period, I doubt we'll see anything at this point.

Here is my thinking. You guys are correct that the current iPad Pro is plenty fast but I would say its still not fast enough for some pro apps which need more horsepower. (now, lets not nitpick for a sec. please)
So, if Apple is going their own way with GPU and CPU in those A chips being done inhouse then we can assume that its only gonna get better and ahead of the competition (hopefully).
Now lets say you do sculpting in Zbrush or Mudbox and would love to pick up your iPad Pro and do some basic/advanced work which I think is totally achievable.
However, there are 2 issues here: 1) we need developer support - that means that in case of Zbrush (Pixologic) & Mudbox (Autodesk) we need them to make a version for iOS that would be serious enough that we could actually replace our machines for most tasks. (of course there will be "truck" users but thats not the discussion here)
    2) we need the horsepower for those apps and in that case we need as many devices as possible to make it viable for the developers to go for it.

Its not just for sculpting. The same could be for animation, photo editing etc. At the moment, I kinda see that the horsepower is getting there but the app support is not. Ie. is there a serious app for photo editing?

So, iPhone 8 & X showed that the A11 is crazy fast chip so as someone mentioned A11X will be a beast due to the GPU being inhouse. So of course if someone is going to get iPad soon then its logical to wait as that will be really future proof for a long time.

In all honesty, I'm not really in a rush to get it this year. I was just wondering as it would be nice to play with it over xmas break but I can wait.

Regardless, iPads will most likely replace 99% of tasks in the future but right now its still not there and there is a long way to go.

And yeah, I would love to have Zbrush version for iOS. That would be amazing :)

I think you're making some basic assumptions that might not be true. We have no idea if zbursh or mudbox would run slowly on the A10 but blazingly fast on the A11. Maybe they'll run slow on both CPUs, or run fast on both.

Either way, I don't see apple rolling out an update so soon after upgrading the iPad Pro this year.

I was more generic than that. My Zbrush comment wasn't really tied to a specific chip. The only assumption I meant was that A11X will be way faster than A10X.
Anyway, lets see whats in store for us next year. A small redesign like 10.5 would be welcomed on the 12.9 version. :)

Yep and the A12 will be faster then the A11, and so on and so forth ;)

My point is that the A10 is plenty fast and I don't know of any app or situation where the A10 is insufficient, but rather the A11 is not.

They will be releasing the HomePod this fall in time for the holidays! Don’t think that gets a shwo though, probably just a press release.

EDIT> Forgot the launch of the iMac Pro too. I think that will happen by the holidays as well.
