will wifi work will gophone plans?

i am thinking about getting a new iphone 3g and using it with the gophone plans and i was wondering if i could still pick up wifi if i dont pay for a data plan?

Of course, why wouldn't it? The wifi antenna in the phone is separate from the cellular antenna (and network).

i wasnt sure if at&t would be able to tell that i was on the internet with my phone and and try and charge me for usage

Wi-Fi will work with no problems. at&t doesn't care when or where you get online, except when you connect to their network.
