Hypothetically speaking, let's say that the virtual keyboard on the iPhone sucked and a lot of people hated it. Would Apple then develop a new amazing physical keyboard for the gen 2 iPhone?

AMAZING physical keyboard? unless its a full out computer keyboard its not amazing, period. I dont get why everyone is pissing their pants that this keyboard is going to suck i text as much as anyone else and if anyone can do a virtual keyboard apple can. people dont understand this screen itself is better than anything on the market it wont work exactly like the ****** virtual keyboards on the market now.

How you know it will be great to type on a keyboard with no feedback? Scott Forstall had a hard time typing on it. And every time I see someone typing on it they are using their two index fingers, poking each letter. I can tell you know, I can type much better and faster on my Pearl than that.

You must have incredibly small fingers :D

DPI only matters if you have a _stylus_.

You'd be a little nervous too if you were having to demo a new product in front of thousands of people. I wouldn't expect a perfect performance from someone who isn't used to performing in that type of atmosphere. Give the guy a break!

It looked like Steve Jobs was typing slowly on it too. Am I supposed to give him a break too?

I can tell you this. That keyboard will not be easy to type on. I can just tell. I have a sidekick 3 and its super easy to type. I think apple shouldve made a physical keyboard since a lot of people like them.

He had to use it with one finger, in an odd position, in order to keep the screen clear for the cameras :)

I was told by my cousin's brother's best buddy who just happens to work in apple R&D that Apple won't put a keyboard on their new phones. The 2nd gen phone will be controlled by a top secret mind control interface.

with an on screen KB you will always be less than 100% vs a physical KB, simply because you have no tactile feel, you have to LOOK at were your fingers are supposed to be pressing the screen. with tactile feel (slide out KB or KBs like on the blackberrys) you dont need to look at every key because you feel them, its like typing on a desktop machine, you can feel where the keys are so you dont even need to look.

ive had a WM phone without a KB and i have a slide out KB on my TyTN now, even with tengo thumb on the screen only phone i was still slower, tengo thumb will outperform a full screen keyboard since there are only 6 leys and it has excelent text pre-emption

He wasn't talking about Steve Jobs. He was referring to Scott Forstall whom himself admitted he was nervous. Why don't you go back to HoFo and troll. I thought I could at least avoid you here.

I think most people can agree that typing on an iPhone will be slower than typing on existing Blackberries and Palm devices.

Hell, I'll probably be able to type faster on my old Nokia 6800.

    But I don't care.

If you really want a phone where your input speed is maximized the iPhone might not be for you. But for me, I see myself using the iPhone much more to view information, and much less to send out information.

Granted, I will use it for text messaging and email, but I do have faith the the on screen keyboard will be more than adequate.

Would Apple go back on their word? Three words.

    Two button mouse.

But as for the iPhone, actually wait and see it before you decide whether or not it sucks. ;)

I hope there's no real keyboard some day. It would ruin it for me.

What do you look at while you're typeing via feel? What you're typeing?

I guess I don't see the need to use this device to send lengthy emails or do extensive wordy texting anyway?
