I saw in another thread that it will not have as strong of a connection as the XS, and all I've been reading is how horrible the XS connectivity has been (and I've seen it with my dd's phone versus my 8+).

Is the XR really gonna be worse?

what thread is that?

i think XR will have better reception. . if you look at the EIRP graph, 200mW is good reception, so XR is generally ok. compared to looking at XS, you see that they are far worse/

Since XR has iPhone 8 style antenna bands (2x2 MIMO), if any, XR should have better cellular and Wi-Fi reception than XS. However, because XS has 4x4 MIMO, it will have faster performance with good signal.

It was mentioned in the complete list of XR and XS differences thread (sorry - don't know how to link that here).

I'm coming from 8+ (if I make the switch, which I'm mainly considering because of the smaller size), and I get much better, consistent signal on my 8+ than dd does on her XS. At least in our area, which is rural.
