I'm tired of this meme that you don't buy first gen Apple products. First gen Apple products are amazing. They may be quickly replaced with something much better, but that's only when the first one is good enough to justify that. Apple doesn't quickly (or ever) replace lackluster first gen products.

As for $2,500, there is no evidence to support that. The expected price is between $1,499 and $1,999.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199. To ask $800 more for the iPhone Ultra will be a stretch as it is. The component cost is the only thing that could push it up toward $2k, and very well may.

As for will I buy it? If it is absolutely a stunner in terms of build quality, features, and Apple polish...there is a chance that I will give it a try, just because it is so different. I don't really believe the form factor is as useful as some people pretend, and I think it will sell poorly due to the fact that you can buy both a better iPhone and a better iPad for less money.

I BASED the price on the Samsung Flip 7 which costs $2,199 ON SALE.
Apple would be in my humble opinion more expensive at $2,499

No.

1) I don't buy first gen, anything, from company.
2) The max I'll spend on a phone, from any company, is ~$1200. Phone just aren't worth more than that, to me, regardless of features.

Definitely not. I stretch my reasoning to get to buying a pro max every 2-3 years. I just got a 17 pro max and I'm hoping to use it for at least 3 years, hopefully 4 or 5.

But in 4 or 5 years, I might consider it, but it depends on a lot of things.

My next phone *might* be the 18 Air. That is if they beef up the camera. I'm not interested in a folding phone. And I will never pay $2000+ for ANY phone.

I will pay no more than maybe 600-700 for a phone. I mean I use it daily, but don't want or need the newest features. So, I am an easy NO for this. I am using a 14 now and may upgrade in 2027 or 2028. I replaced battery and phone is like brand new.

Yes. I am bored with the slab form factor. I already have a iPhone 17 Pro and a M4 iPad Pro but have been considering a iPad mini for reading for a while now. The Fold will solve two problems. 2.5k is my limit provided Apple do not skimp on battery life and storage. I do believe the phone will be priced at 1999.

Yuuup, can't wait for the opportunity, personally

I really hope the speakers and cameras are good, but on such a thin device I’m afraid they'll have to be somewhat of a compromise :/

Yes.

Waiting for second or third generation I admit is the smarter move, but I've been wanting a folding phone for a long time and frankly have found most 1st-gen Apple products pretty good overall.

In terms of the price, yes very high, but given how many things I do with the phone, and how this might expand on them, the price is almost inelastic to me. They are good value even at that price. With the higher prices, I may update it less frequently though...

If I got the the point where I am thinking to replace both my iPad and phone at the same time then I would consider it as a replacement for both.

No. The most any normal citizen needs to pay for a phone is $500. Anything more is marketing nonsense.

If you're a professional in your field you have specialist kit already. Imagine a photographer turned up to your wedding with just an iPhone! If your favourite phone games need a controller you're playing them on the wrong platform. For the rest of us I sincerely believe that the top-end phones offer nothing over the mid-range.

Are the cameras better? Yes. Does it make the slightest difference to an 8x5 print or the 5x3 window we look at them on? Not in the slightest. A Pixel 10a or the iPhone 17e are more phone than most people will ever use.

When the iPhone Fold comes out I will order the spec'd out version, whatever the price may end up being, of this iPhone only to add this device in sealed Apple packaging into my iPhone collection. I have no intention of opening the packaging or using this iPhone but I do recognize the importance of this particular form factor in the iPhone world which is why I will only be purchasing this device for collection purposes only.

Why are people so convinced it’s going to be that much more expensive than the competitors?
Look at literally every other phone Apple makes, all within 100 or $200 of their direct Samsung or Google competitor.

Samsung Galaxy S25: $799
Google Pixel 10: $799
iPhone 17: $799

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: $1099
iPhone Air: $999

Samsung galaxy S25 Ultra: $1299
Pixel 10 Pro XL: $1199
iPhone 17 Pro Max: $1199

Now let’s do some quick logic here… the Apple phone, despite being designed by Apple, is going to have the same screens manufactured by Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy ZFold 7: $1999
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: $1799

I fully expect the iPhone fold to come in at that exact same $1999 as the Galaxy Fold.
This might shock some people here, but Apple isn’t dumb.

The mini is a great device and form factor, I love mine way more than the full size iPads I have. So much lighter, and the keyboard is a great size in portrait mode

If you read a lot you may still want to pick one up as a secondary device, its nice not to burn through your phone battery while reading, & they’ve been going on sale a lot lately as this one reaches the end of it’s production. I just got one to replace my gen 6

Bonus: If you like iOS 18, most of them in stock at both Apple and third parties still come with iPadOS 18

I will be spending for a Fold when it becomes available. Slab phones are all the same now, while my Air does provide a more comfortable day to day experience, really nothing has changed since iphone X in terms of change/increase in functionality/usability of these devices. Ive been jealous of the android foldables and would love to be able to carry an "ipad mini" that folds up for everyday carry. I never understood how some people carried an ipad mini in their Jacket pocket or such. I feel this finally enables a portable use case for something with iPad software/apps and flexibility of a phone carry.

Probably. But it will mostly be determined on how much iPadOS I get in this iFold. If it is just iOS apps but bigger, I'll pass. I want split-screen, slide-over, resizable windows, and the ability to continue using my apps on the cover screen or inner screen when I open/close the device.
