Will Zeroing a HHD with Disc Utility identify bad sectors?

I've bought a 2nd hand USB external HHD.

The guy said it was mint condition and hardly used, but I wanna check myself if there are any bad sectors.

I was gonna zero the drive anyway, and I wondered if doing so with Disc Utility would be enough to reveal bad sectors, if there were any to be found?

Or do I need to check for bad sectors some other way?

Hard drive firmware automatically remaps bad sectors. So you won't really know about them anyway.
