I had a 320gb hd drive in my mbp that was running out of space. So I ordered a 750gb drive to replace it. My mbp is partition 25% Mac 75% Windows.

I used Carbon Copy to clone the Mac side of the drive to the new drive.
Then placed the new drive in the mbp. I then used sys utilities to partitions the new drive 25% Mac & 75% windows. The I downloaded Winclone to the Mac side and attempted to make a image of the old bootcamp partition. I selected to save it to an external drive that is formated for Mac.

About 80% in the Winclone stopped and said Errors Found see logs.

Tech support can't figure out why it's not making the image. Then they suggested I turn off the screen saver. So that's where I am not.

Any suggestions while it tries again?

Can you please post the logs.

That's the Console Log. The Winclone Log is what I was looking for. ;)

As a file it is at ~/Library/Logs/Winclone.log

Surround it in CODE tags or attach it.

Ok I'm noticing that it's always stopping at around the PERCENT 67 numbers each time I try it. Here's the entire winclone log file. It just stopped again about 3 mins ago. God knows I hope you can help me.

Here's the entire winclone log file.

Try disabling compression in the Preferences. It's having trouble creating the image, could be that or it could be a bad sector on your source disk.

For reference. Which version of Windows is this? Disabling compression was recommended for W7, but I notice you are on OS X 10.5...

Ok I've unchecked it. I'm going to try it now. See you two hours.

Ok before it only took 2 hrs. With the compression off it took 5 hours and still found errors. However at least this time it gave a better explanation at the very end. Looks like I have a bad sector on the drive. Now my next question is can a sector be repaired, or removed? If yes how?

Here's the winclone log. (I notice it did 100% of something but stopped at 68% of the cloning.)

Ok now my old drive won't boot up to the windows side for me to run the CHKDSK /F

It's saying it's not a bootable disk.

Is this because it's in an external enclosure and the new 750 is in the Mac?

Do this mean I have to reinstall the old drive back into the Mac in order to get it to bootup? I don't have a boot disk for XP. Is that a way to make a CD-R one from the Mac side?

The data is still on my old drive cause i see it in Finder.

Do this mean I have to reinstall the old drive back into the Mac in order to get it to bootup?

I'm afraid so. Windows doesn't like booting from USB, and Macs make that doubly difficult as they are finicky about booting "legacy" (MBR) OSes from USB at all.

This is generally why we don't swap the drives until we have a good image of the working internal drive when upgrading to a larger drive. (Out of paranoia when I have done this, I make both a Winclone backup and also a bit-wise "dd" image).

You might however also be able to run CHKDSK /F from within a VM. Download an ISO of W7 (legally), install it in Fusion/Parallels/VirtualBox without entering a product key (30 day "trial" mode). Mount the old/external partition. CHKDSK /F it in the VM. Proceed.

B

Ok ran the chkdsk and it fixed the errors I assume.

Now how do I make the image BEFORE removing the old drive from the Mac?

The other MAc tech told me to do it afterwards.

What steps do you suggest I follow to get this image made?

Well it seems like the chkdsk didn't fix the bad sector. After 6 more hours it failed again.

In the past when I used to do a chkdsk, after it ran it used to stay on a screen that told me the HD size, total files, total bad sectors et..... This time it went through Step 1-3 Step 2-3 then when I saw it go to step 3-3 I went outside to do the pool cover. When I returned the notebook had rebooted and was back at the Mac login screen. Is that the way it suppose to work or did something go wrong during the last step of the chkdsk that cause the mac to reboot?

Ok I ran chkdsk /f again in safe mode and this time I watched the entire process. The report at the end of the chkdsk steps stayed on the screen only for a few seconds before it rebooted the notebook. However I was able to see it say there were 0 bad sectors.

So now what? Winclone says the drive has a bad sector but the chkdsk /f says it don't.

Check your external (the destination drive) with disk utility. The error message could also be referring to that.

At this point, I'm afraid that I would drop to Terminal and whip out dd/ddrescue. Since both hdiutil and ntfsclone are reporting issues with the filesystem, you have to use a tool that ignores the file system and can be configured to ignore errors.

This will only give you a backup copy you could restore to the exact same size on the destination drive, but will give you another indication of the presence or absence of bad sectors on the drive.

Ok I check the external & the internal with disk utilities verify & repair. All reports came back ok.

So far I've been able to follow all of your instructions but the last set confused me a little. When you say "drop to Terminal and whip out dd/ddrescue" What's Terminal? and What's DD?
I think I located ddrescue. Is this it? http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html

Also how do I use it?

After some research I read that ddrecue may also wipeout the data on the drive. Is this true? REMEMBER: I'm using my external backup drive of my MBP to store the image and have no current backup of my files. I had to format it to MAC OS in order for it to save the WinClone Image which never happen. I CAN'T LOSE THIS DATA so is this ddrecue a MAC or WINDOWS program?

Also how do I use it?

I'm looking for a primer. Haven't found a good one yet. As you notice dd/ddrescue can be dangerous if used improperly.

dd is a unix program that ships with OS X, while ddrescue is an improved version from the FSF/GNU folks as you found. It can be installed on the Mac via darwinports or fink.

Both can save their images to a regular file you can put on any drive you have handy, but you do need to be careful.

EDIT: This http://www.debianadmin.com/recover-data-from-a-dead-hard-drive-using-dd.html about covers the basics off dd, which is the one I am most familiar with.

Code:
dd if=/dev/disk0s3 of=[B]/Volumes/External[/B]/Windows.dd.img conv=noerror,sync

should give you a bitwise image of your Windows partition, skipping any errors and replacing them with zeroes. (Replace /Volumes/External with the path to your external disk). BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT THE STRINGS AFTER if AND of, DON'T USE SPACES OR USE THE NAME OF AN EXISTING FILE FOR of OR IT WILL BE OVERWRITTEN.

dd does not give you any visible sign that it is working. You can track its progress by sending it a signal from another process or just looking at the size of the output file.

You might also look into doing a backup from Windows somehow while you can still boot to it. XP backup is lousy, but better than nothing if you cant lose the data.

First I hope your Thanksgiving was very fulfilling for you and your family. Second, I personally want to thank you for your time and assistant in helping me with this hard drive issue. You haven't seen any replies from me because it really got the best of me. I cant believe it took up 4 of my vacation days and still left me in the same situation where I started. (None of which was your fault.) So I had to step away from it for a few days.

Now I'm back on the mission of upgrading this 320gb to the new 750gb that I paid for.

We last left off at the suggestion of me using dd/ddrescue to make the image file. After researching I've downloaded the ddrescue onto the mac original 320gb dirve. Now honestly I know nothing about getting it installed properly or where or how to initiate the string command for it to work.

So any assistant will be appreciated.

Ok i see you must use Darwin Ports or MacPorts to install ddrescue. However when I went to a few links I was told MacPorts can only be installed on machines that have XCODE on it. When MacPorts attempted the install it was stopped because XCODE is not on my mac. So I tried to download XCODE only to get this notice:
Requirements
Must be registered as an Apple Developer. If you have already registered, log in with the Apple ID and password you used to register.

To install Xcode, you must have an Intel processor-based Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

SInce I'm not a Apple Developer what's next?

I can't win. Ok I signed up as a Apple Developer and verified email address. Went to download Xcode and was still denied.

LOL. I've been facing my own HDD battles over the break.

I have an external HDD that is FAT32 that I was using for archiving some data, but it turns out that Windows 7 sees the file system as if the drive had never been used, only the OEM's utilities seem to be on it. Mac OS X sees all the archive files on it. The two FAT tables must be out of sync somehow. So I've spent my non-family time working on getting 1TB of data moved off somewhere else or making sure that I have other verified copies of the data, and then reformat the drive (probably as HFS+) and move it back. It's going so slowly.

Have you considered giving the built in dd a go as I outlined above? I am definitely more familiar with that over ddrescue myself. Otherwise, PM me an e-mail address and I'll send you a precompiled ddrescue, it doesn't seem to depend on anything else so it should be a small file to send.

Wow that sucks. Man I wish I could help out.
The only reason I didn't choose to use dd is because it won't skip the bad blocks or sectors and according to WinClone my 320 drive has a bad sector. But it may be worth a try since chkdsk says there's no bad sectors right?

I also sent you my email address.
