Ever since having my Mac Studio, I log in with the fingerprint reader on my keyboard and usually launch mail or safari straight away. I have noticed that 7/10 times it launches them in the bottom left portion of the screen and not where I previously had them. So, I move and resize them, but it just happens again and again. Most other windows seem fine, finder windows for example have held their positions (but that has always been touch and go in the past).

Why is such a simple thing such an issue for MacOS and how can I stop it?

UPDATE - Now Resolved

This problem never went away by itself so I finally managed to resolve it:

Suspected cause:

I think having dual monitors or swaping different types of monitors initially causes the problem (some sort of display bug).

Resolution:
  • Put all of my local files into Users > Shared
  • Created a new user profile
  • Logged into that new profile with my Apple ID which restored everything in the cloud
  • dragged my local files out of Users > Shared into my new profile.
  • Deleted the original profile.
  • Checked all of the previously offending apps, everything now works as expected.
Its a bit of a pain but it didn't take very long and it was driving me mad :)

You say it launches these apps in the left portion of the screen, but what is the window size compared to what you last had it sized to?

Just did a test on my M1 Mini (running macOS 12.3.1). I opened Safari, made it small (about 1/16 of my screen size) and moved it to the bottom right corner. I can quit Safari and/or log out and/or restart and it restores to exactly the same window size and position I left it at when I relaunch it.

Will be interesting for others who have a Studio to test this out and report back. However, it doesn't make sense to me how it would have anything to do with the Studio. Seems like an issue with macOS. Is your studio running a different macOS version than you "other Mac"?

I have the same positive experience with Safari on my Mac Studio. No matter the size or location of a Safari window, when I quit and restart Safari it is in the previous position with the previous size. Also working for me.

Thanks for the replies. I have since noticed that turning off FileVault has cleared up this issue. Odd but there you go.

I also have this problem.

Can anyone confirm that disabling "FileVault" helps?

A bit of a poor choice: encrypted disk or windows in its place....

Just to update, it didn’t solve my problem. Because it’s intermittent I thought it had gone.

My first suspicion is that it has something to do with the time it takes the USBC and HDMI monitors to wake up.

The HDMI screen takes a little longer to wake up from sleep than the USBC. So the system sees only one additional monitor, so it puts windows there, a moment later the third monitor says "I'm here" but windows are already on the second one so "everything is OK"...

I did not have this problem in Big Sur and cMP.

...The HDMI screen takes a little longer to wake up from sleep than the USBC.
I have one LG connected with Thunderbolt/USB-C and a second with HDMI. The HDMI wakes immediately, the Thunderbolt takes about 5 seconds to "wake" and sometimes the windows do "re-appear" on the Thunderbolt-connected display at small sizes in the lower left part of the screen, or sometimes really small in the dead center of the screen.

I can't remember a time when this wasn't the normal behavior. The only time it doesn't happen is if an app is set to full screen.

I have something similar. I normally have Safari open on the second display of my iMac and recently, if I hit cmd-n for a new window, it always opens on the main iMac display in the bottom left corner. I don't think it's Mac Studio specific.

I couldn't tell you when it started happening but it's within the last few weeks.

I don't have FileVault enabled.

I've seen mention of deleting .plist files but this is happening to me for many applications including Safari, Mail, Sonos, Music, Photo's. There must be a fix for this?

To clarify my setup I have one Studio Display connected directly to a Mac Studio. That's it.

Just an update for anyone with this issue, I contacted Apple today for support and was told that because its a new product they would like to refer it to their senior engineers. Had no clue on how to fix it. Crazy.

Strange how effectively the same thing happens on my 2017 iMac.

I have similar but different. It will start small and in the left, but then suddenly expand to where it previously was.

For anyone still experiencing this problem, check out what fixed it for me in my original post (along with what I think caused it to begin with).
