iMac 27" i7 with OS X v 10.6.x when I create the bootcamp partition for windows 7 and I install from my original DVD of Windows 7. I format the partition during the install of windows 7 and on the first reboot after windows 7 first part of the install, the screen shows the Windows 7 logo and says continuing installation and then a black screen and then nothing. I have to hard power off the iMac and then it starts over says the thing about the system didn't shut down properly and gives me the option to start safe mode etc. and does the same thing each time. Any ideas on what to do to install windows 7 would be great, thanks.

Well still the exact same issue...

I followed the above link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173

    and downloaded this file: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3983

From a Windows XP Pro machine:

    I downloaded the "iMac_Late_2009_2010_Win7_Drivers.zip" file from Apple.com
I formatted a jump drive and selected FAT32
I extracted the zip file above to a temporary folder
I dragged the "Drivers" folder and the file "AutoUnattend.xml" from the temporary folder to the root folder of the jump drive.

    On the iMac:
I inserted the jump drive into the first usb port on the back of the iMac (nearest the edge where the DVD rom is.
I booted the iMac and used Bootcamp to prepare a 100GB partition for bootcamp/windows.
I used the bootcamp option to start the windows installation

The iMac started the windows installation. I then used the advanced options to format the partition before starting the installation. I then let the system start the installation of Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit

The system finished the first part of the installation and then did the first reboot. It rebooted and the Starting Windows message was displayed along with the animated windows 7 logo. Then the screen went black, I noticed the usb drive flash for a few seconds and then everything stopped and the black screen stayed. I had to hard power off the system and on the reboot it again said “Safe mode… Start Normal” etc..

Might the iMac need a Firmware update? Is there any chance that Windows 7 Ultimate is the issue? Any other ideas on ho to get this install to complete I’d appreciate.

Well FINALLY! it worked. The missing bit of information was that the jump drive (at least in my case) had to be formatted FAT32 using the iMac/DiskUtilities and not on a Windows PC. As soon as I did this it worked!

Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction!
