On a semi-related note, how do you access the menus from the keyboard? With Windows you hold Alt then press the letter for the menu you want, but I can't figure out how to do this in OS X.

Ctrl-F2 gets you to the menu bar, then you have to use the arrows to get to the menu item you want.

If you have a ibook or powerbook you'll want to check the box in the Keyboard system preferences that swaps the "fn" key -- in other words, ctrl-f2 functions as ctrl-f2, if you want to increase the brightness you use fn-f2 (the default is that brightness is f2, menu is fn-ctrl-f2)

hey mac_geek... remember a couple things... one, when you "x" out an app, it's on the LEFT side, not the right. And when you "x" the app, it's still in the memory, you need to press the command/"apple" button, to get it out of the memory. You'll see what i mean when you get it. Also, play with expose... i don't know how i got along without it. One more thing, pressing the "apple"-tab button does the same thing in windows as it does in Panther. You need to hold down the command/"apple" button, and then press tab while still holding the button, and you'll see all the apps up at once. Just play around with it, and you'll love it.

heres a better explanation...
when u "x" out of a "WINDOW", it just closes that window. to exit the program, you need to go to that program's menu and select quit. really, if you think about it i think it makes more sense then windows. thats the biggest thing i see with people that use macs, they just "x" out of the window and the app is still open. its like they dont see the little triangles in the dock that tell you an app is open (hint). also, if u click and drag on the dock "seperator", the little line by the trash, you can ajust the size of the dock. you can right click on it too, to adjust more settings.
the more i use my mac, the more SWEET cool features i see. like, i just realized that pressing option+f2 (f2 controls brightness on a powerbook) opens up system prefs. and brings you to the displays window. ditto with option+f5, except it brings up the sound window (f5 controls volume on a powerbook). Thats SWEET!!! :p
have fun, i know you will :D

BTW, tell all of your friends how sweet macs are. its sooo fun to wow them. backlit keyboard's a killer, watch out :D

What's wrong with the headphones that come with the iPod? As far as earbuds go, the iPod headphones are pretty good IMO. I've never tried using other headphone types with my iPod.

Nothing against them, I'm sure they're fine. But I've heard complaints. I just had other earphones that I am using for something else. So the originals sit, unused. The ones I've tried were a little uncomfortable in my ears.

If you think the iPods earphones suck, wait till you find out that it's not the earphones that are causing bad audio quality, it's the iPod's headphone amp, and sound processing.

Um... then why does my iPod sound so good? Especially when I plug it into my home stereo speakers? And before you ask, I'm may not consider myself an audiophile, but I have really good ears. You should have heard the sound coming from my previous device. That was bad.

Have you used an iPod, or just reading reviews on CNET?

That's very unlike Apple, considering how intuitive it is

Congratulations Mac_Geek! Welcome to the Light Side! :D I joined 11 months ago. Best thing I ever did.

I found switching challenging at times because I had so much unlearning to do. In Windows, if you don't know how to do something - right-click. In OSX - it means you're looking for the hard way! :D Try drag and drop.

Things I took a while to get used to...
- the application menu anchored at the top of the screen
- Cut, copy and paste key combinations.
- Keystroke combinations (Windows made me mouse dependent - OSX is slowly undoing that)
- Lack of a forward delete key.
- the application installation process

Things I can't live without...
- Sidetrack
- Sogudi
- Menumeters
- Pastor
- MacUpdate website (or VersionTracker if you prefer)
- MacRumors website

Four quick reasons I'd never go back...
- Security
- Stability
- Robustness
- Aesthetics

A sequence of emotions I went thru...
- First impressions: Love and ecstasy (I waited NINETEEN years!)
- After the honeymoon: Letdown (At the end of the day it is still just a computer - and it has its own bugs and gripes)
- After having to troubleshoot family and work Windows: Woohoo! Like - this (insert problem here) is not a problem on Macs :p Letdown over!! :D
- After OSX 10.3.4: Amazement. I can't believe how solid OSX has become. In my eleven months, nearly every instability problem I've had has been fixed thru the upgrades (from 10.2) - and NO new ones have been introduced!!! Amazing! (well - none that I've found)

thanks for the clean up. I wrote that at about 1:00, and i was very tired. So thanks again for the cleanup.. :)

My iPod also sounds great through a my hifi speakers.

It's just the headphones that come with it suffer from really bad bass distrortion if I turn up the volume or change the EQ effects.

I am going to buy some of the in-ear ones (not the Apple ones) but since they are £125 in the UK I will be waiting a bit for my credit card to recover from the Powerbook first.....
