Windows File Sharing -- SLOW

Is there any reason that Windows file sharing is so slow? in a quick test of the same file it was:

AFP: <1min
SAMBA: >128min

Anyone have suggestions, i would like to be able to access AFP on windows but probally not going to happen
 
Im new to OS X. Ive been using Samba (mount smb...) but my shares keep getting disconnected when my computer goes to sleep. I read that AFP is more reliable and doesnt do this. Whats the command for AFP so I can connect to my WinXP network shares?
