Thing is that blog is just poorly managed. There has been no updates about mac msn since the release of 7. Heads up every 2 weeks to tell us whats going on would be pretty nice

It's pretty unlikely that we're going to post an update every two weeks. If we do that, we'll just get accused of spending too much time blogging and not enough time actually working on the next version. :)

But more to the point, software schedules are fluid. Most companies don't want to post updates like that because things change rapidly. Internally, schedules slip because things take longer than you thought they would or someone gets sick or a hundred other things. Externally, there's lots of factors beyond your control, such as the schedules for other teams whose work you're relying on. Most software companies won't say anything until things are pretty close to set in stone, and even then, they're most likely to say "it's coming in the spring" instead of "it's coming on March 12th". That gives some wiggle room in case Murphy's Law kicks in. So even if we were to try to post every couple of weeks, it would mostly be to say "sorry, we don't have a date to share yet".

I realise that this isn't the answer that you want, but it's the answer I've got. :) Mac Mojo is definitely the first place where we'll post about what we're working on.

Nadyne.

It wasn't so much the date I was looking for, just a little communication.

We all know your working on the next version, and we know AV is coming, but I have just tried out the new beta of windows live messenger for windows, and it raises a few eyebrows. Very attractive, chock full of features. Just what sort of features can we expect to see in the next version? A UI change maybe, and does messenger for mac have a beta program?

I totally understand that you want to know what's coming. Right now, I can't share that - but the second that I can, it'll be posted at Mac Mojo. Likewise, if we do a public beta programme, it'll get posted there too. We did that when we did the public beta for Remote Desktop Connection, too.

I read somewhere (a long time ago) that it was coming in October! Time is running up! Come on Microsoft!

Ams.

Well a lot of people are waiting including myself... Imagine that i want to buy a cheap pc only for video calling.

(there is now way i'm going to install Windows on my Mac!!!)

Yes, so long as you install the iSight drivers :)

You should go easy on the MacBU, if memory serves me right they are effectively waiting for the Windows version to switch over to the new A/V protocol and then they can implement it on Microsoft Messenger.

Of course, I wonder how they'll do that smoothly since easy (and more importantly forced) upgrading of WLM has never happened.

So how can I run Windows Live Messenger on my MBP so that the experience will be closest to the one I had on my PC? Is there one for Mac only with features of that PC .exe one?

I'd like to use custom emoticons, have my own pic, see other people's pic and accept their custom emoticons, record voice clips etc.!

I downloaded Adium, but from the looks of things it appears pretty much handicapped compared to my PC version Messenger.

What would be the best solution???

Thanks

Its "been coming" since I was looking to buy a Macbook Pro, In April last year.

Why couldn't you have just used the codecs they currently use? I mean 3rd parties have managed it why can't the company with the correct code do it?

Also, I'd make a point to whoever it may concern that I think anyone here wouldn't mind using V8 or whatever your calling the new AV in a "alpha" or "beta" stages just so we can finally be equal on the webcam front with the PC people. Im currently using a 3rd party effort for webcam, and really your software in alpha can't be any worse!!! (Also I like the mac messenger layout, much nicer than PC IMO.)

4/5 years behind windows when mac laptops and desktops have had cameras built in for that time too is frankly shocking planning.

So please, release whatever you have got in january, and let us play. You will get feedback so testing goes quicker and the people who complain now will atleast see some progress.

Thanks. :)

Ok so I've downloaded Microsoft Messenger 7.0.1 or what it's called and it seems pretty cool! You can receive, save and post custom emoticons, which is exactly what I wanted!!

The only feature I still miss is the Voice Clip Recorder...

Lest we forget...

Sounds petty but I really want to see the handwriting feature of WLM.
We art students communicate primarily in doodles.

I agree the only reason I want Windows on my Mac is to have WLM the Windows version IMO is much nicer and easier to use as I'm use to it, as well as it having a nice interface of the new vista. I like how you can do AV which is what I am desperate for! I am contemplating running vmware fusion with XP just for WLM

As a side note, I remember reading that the MacBU will be demo-ing A/V on personal accounts at Macworld for release later this year.

That's a pretty big leap forward as I've been using Mac's for 8 years and not being able to use my webcam back then hurt me. Not that I'll use it much now anyway, but, it will aid the software.

Linky

Exactly
I'm thinking of upgrading my ram just so I can install windows with paralells/vmware and have it running smoothly , purely for live messenger.

i use aMSN.
It works really well for me and it allows you to use your iSight for webcamming etc.
:)

Upon reading your post I decided to try out aMSN, but it worked kind of slow for me (even though I have 4GB RAM), and it seemed kinda unclear (buddy list, chat window - too much info all gathered in the same window, don't know..); I found Microsoft Messenger more effective and faster... but I wish MM had the Voice clip option and others that aMSN has, but MM doesn't...

I really love how amsn has all the features of the WLM for P.C but I just don't like the way it brings them to the table, the software is bloated and because of that is very slow, regardless of how much horse power you have. It's also very ugly, I have tried so many skins yet I just can't find one I truly like, I do like the simplicity of the mac for messenger and am looking forward to the new version for A/V support as well as other features like nudges, winks, voice clips

Hi LooLarr. I have a new MacBook and a new baby! All of my family has MS Messenger for Windows and they want to video chat w/ the new baby. I just downloaded Messenger for MAC 7 and realized the video feature is not supported. How did you make Messenger for MAC and iSight work for video chat? Thank you!!
