Being a new WP owner, does this just send a message that your phone is ready to be updated or how does this work for WP updates?

    Thanks for the quick response.

Here's how it works for me. I'm enrolled in the Developer Preview program. This morning, I got a notification saying that I have an update waiting and I clicked okay for it to download. It downloaded, asked it I wanted to install it, and then I did.

But if you're a new WP owner, and you don't have the DP app installed (and device enrolled) you won't be getting this YET.

Thanks for the clarification. I will be patient then. :)

    No problem.

Another clarification, by the way, is that the DP program isn't the same as normal DP programs. While there may be updates to it, it's safe to assume that this is actually the finished product. Or at least that it's RTM'd and the only thing we'll be getting is bug fixes until the next GDR.

Unfortunately I can't get the update on my 8X. According to wpcentral the 8X won't get gdr1 until it's official.

Although it's very easy to get it.

    Sign into

    With your Microsoft account.

Then on your phone download 'preview for developers' from the App Store

Simply enable it in the app and then go into settings and hit phone update....

Hey presto jump the queue and keep up to date without having to wait for carriers. You will automatically update to latest carrier version anyway / still.

    I'm running it on my 930 :)

There are some worthwhile things in the GDR1 update. One is allowing for tethering (via wifi or BT now!) and A2DP syncing updates. (If you connect your phone to your car, this update may alleviate certain sync/delay/clicking problems. I stress 'may alleviate'. I am currently 2000 miles from home in a crappy rental car, so can't yes this feature out.)

IE is much better in terms of rendering pages, but there are still issues with websites like this one, as I mentioned above. I don't know if it is coding specifically for this webpage or something inherent in IE?

And of course, making folders is easier now and a built in feature. Don't need the app 'App Folders' any more.

So, you may want to consider the dev edition download if any of these things are beneficial to you.

    Native app folders are fantastic...

Xbox music app is still broken for me. No live widget and no artist info. Will stick to mix radio.

Ive never got this to work since I got my phone. It asks me to go a website, I try to sign in and then it times out.

I may try this developers thingy as a newb like me can even do it!
