I went to use my Yoga and got hit by Windows Update. I gave it two minutes and then put it down and grabbed my MacBook Pro and looked up what's in it and it's a big one. So I thought I'd create a thread on Windows Updates, similar to the many threads on the macOS operating system subforums.

Today’s big Windows 11 update (the May 2026 Patch Tuesday release — KB5089549 / KB5083631 depending on version) is a pretty substantial one. The headline features are:

  • New “Xbox Mode” for gaming PCs and handhelds
  • Major File Explorer fixes and performance improvements
  • Better Windows Hello reliability
  • New haptic feedback support
  • Large security patch rollout (120–138 vulnerabilities fixed)

The biggest visible change is probably Xbox Mode. It gives Windows a more console-style fullscreen gaming interface and reduces background tasks to free up RAM and improve responsiveness for gaming handhelds and PCs. Microsoft says rollout is gradual, so not everyone will see it immediately even after installing the update.

There are also a lot of quality-of-life fixes people have wanted for years:

  • File Explorer no longer flashes bright white in dark mode
  • Better memory usage and startup performance
  • Faster app launches
  • Explorer window layouts/sorting now persist correctly
  • FAT32 formatting limit expanded up to 2TB
  • Expanded archive support
  • Improved voice typing and accessibility features

Security-wise, this is one of Microsoft’s larger patch releases recently. Reports vary slightly, but Microsoft fixed roughly 120–138 vulnerabilities, including around 17–31 critical flaws. The good news: there were reportedly no actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities this month.

There were a surprising number of reboots in this update. I'll have to update my desktop as well as I don't like update surprises.

Not here I took manual control over Windows updates and removed much of Microsoft's nonsense. So my primarily remains constant & stable. I far prefer to wait and see the fallout then I decide if the update benefits my usage versus having random surprises from Microsoft...

Did you manually download the secure boot cert update?

I see that folks are mad that xbox mode doesn't work with multi monitors.

They may fix it, but as it stands the Xbox doesn’t support multi monitor, so no one should be surprised.
No but computers do and Xbox "MODE" is available on PCs. so yes, they really should fix it if they want it adapted on PC. If gaming, I would have 3 displays, a 34 inch ultrawide and 2 24s flanking it for peripheral views.
