I got my first ipod in December as a birthday gift, and the time only had an Acer (ugh) laptop, so I downloaded itunes and used my nano with Windows. I just bought a MB this month and got an ipod touch as well - the ipod touch has only been used with my mac and although the nano works on my MB, it says "only Mac formatted ipods can be updated."

Is it possible to reformat my nano for my mac so that I can update the software if need be? I no longer use my Windows laptop with my ipods anyway.

    Thanks!

Have you tried to restore the iPod? When it is restored you just plug it into you Mac and it will be formatted to Mac.

Make sure you back up your music & movies first.

Of course I did think of this, I just didn't want to try it in the event it actually wouldn't work, so I wouldn't be erasing my videos and music for nothing.

    Thanks! :)

I also was able to restore and reformat my iPod classic onto my MBP when I bought it last April, as the iPod had been Windows formatted prior to that. The key is to have your music library on iTunes already transferred to the MB when you set about restoring the iPod to its original settings; you will then be asked whether you wish for it to be formatted to Mac or Windows and when you have clicked it to Mac, Apple registers the iPod's details identically except for its formatting preference which is now listed as Mac; then sync it and you should be fine. Good luck

Thanks! I finally got around to trying it tonight and the restore went off without a hitch. Luckily I keep all the same music in my itunes as I want on my ipod, so it wasn't much inconvenience to start over!
Everything is all mac-formatted now and good to go! Not a trace of Windows left. :D
