Nothing specific to be honest. I think i just miss the variety of apps and having to fix my pc on a daily basis because something went wrong lol

That's why I un-switched! The worst part was "If it broke, just reinstall the OS!". I'm sorry, but coming from a world where system restore or a few registry keys could pretty much fix anything in under 5 minutes, the attitude of reinstall the OS to fix a bug was the final straw... that or the expose in snow leopard, that made me go to Windows 7 as my main OS.

Either way, OS X is still a rock solid OS 99% of the time, and because of Final cut I couldn't live without it:mad:

...

there are definately some things windows seems to do better. The thing I like the most about OS X though is the differance between system preferances and the control panel. The control panel has so much **** that most people never use let alone even understand, especially when it comes to networking and sharing. OS X seems to do the same things but with WAY less options and check boxes and buttons to press to go here and there just to get something to work. I like the dock better than the desktop but I do wish there were ways to work with the trash a little better and also cut and paste files. OS X definately has the stability though which even 7 doesn't match so that is why I love it, stability, security and ease of use.

Recent switcher here too...at least dual user, haven't cut off Windows completely until I sort out how to make the Mail program do everything I had in Windows.

My main annoyance so far is the inability to cut and paste files in Finder. Is there any third party app that lets you do this?

I also agree that it would be handy to have a way to click on something to see the Desktop. I am using the keyboard shortcut but it seems to me that since the Desktop is the Finder app that clicking on either side of the Dock where the Desktop shows through should bring up the Desktop, but it doesn't. It does change the active app to Finder on the Menu Bar but it does not bring it to the front. Just one more quirk to get used to I guess.

You can set one of your hot corners to bring up the desktop. I don't recall exactly how to get to the menu but somebody here should be able to help.

I cut and paste files in Finder. Am I misunderstanding you?

Edit: I copy and paste. Maybe you're referring to not being able to delete and then paste.

I'm an idiot. Yeah, the desktop is in the hot corners. Problem solved.

i just recently purchased my first mac on december 23 2009. it is a g3 imac 400mhz processor and 256mb ram soon to be 1 gb once i decide to install it it arrived today from crucial but didnt install it yet. i have a windows laptop running xp that works ok from 2000, a compaq desktop from 2005 that has a 3,0 ghz processor and 512 mb ram, and a 2007 gateway desktop that has vista premium. i have to say i think the imac is far superior to any of the other units even though 2 are newer. my imac blows away the compaq with xp on it and really blows away the gateway with vista as far as start up and shut down times. i cant wait until one of the windows machines croaks to replace it with another mac.

Yes, I was specifically referring to cut and paste in my prior post, not copy and paste. I find dragging multiple files from one window to another far less convenient than cutting and pasting.

Hopefully there is a 3rd party app that can solve that problem for me.

The hot corner post was a great solution to the view desktop question. Thanks!

I miss clicking on the "Show Desktop" icon to show my desktop. I try to stay away from the keyboard as much as possible, but find my MBP requires it for a lot of things.

Maybe you should switch to using the keyboard as much as possible. It's faster than mousing only and certainly faster than moving back and forth all the time.

I also miss opening a pic and automatically being able to slide show through all the pics in a certain folder or on the desktop. I can't stand Preview for that reason, since all it allows is looking at one pic. I can load them up in iPhoto to get a slide show, but it's an extra step.

You could just use Cover Flow or Quick Look. It's even faster.

Windows does have a few things going for it, but I don't think those are two of them.

Two things that might help:

For a quick slide show, select the files of interest in Finder, hit the space bar ("Quicklook"), then press the play icon at the bottom (must be OS X 10.5 or later); clicking the diagonal pair of arrows will switch it to fullscreen.

I have been using Macs primarily for two decades and for at least half that time, Finder has been pretty sucky. Some while back, I discovered Path Finder (cocoatech.com). If you can justify the price, this tool can greatly improve your file management experience. From what I can tell, it has been struggling a bit on snow leopard, but he is working pretty hard to get the bugs out.

no, you can't cut and paste in finder. delete and paste is... deleting... and then you have nothing to paste... i think you're misunderstanding yourself

Relax, it will pass
It's like stopping smoking
You will crave it for a while, but it is really the best thing for you

If you need "the patch" you can Bootcamp
Of if you need "the gum" you can run Fusion or Parallels

Great answer. Couldn't of done better myself... :)

I first got a Macbook shortly after 10.5 was released and switched from dual booting to about 95% OSX usage when I bought an 09 Mac Pro in June. I really love the OS, but I did have to tweak things to get it running smoothly of course. I go used to the not having cut and paste and the not being able to maximize. Drag then going back to delete is like second nature now and I usually don't maximize anything anymore.

However, my biggest quirk I have yet to fix... Pasting things into a folder that has some data already and performing a "merge". OSX only wants to replace files, doesn't give any timestamps as to which folder had the newest data which forces me to figure out which file I want one by one. If anyone can shed some light on a possible work around or fix I would be very grateful.

i read the EDIT and it doesn't make sense..

I wrote that I copy and paste all the time, but realized right after I typed that he was talking about the cut action when the Mac OS only has delete. Anyway, that's what I was trying to say. I didn't think anyone would misunderstand the EDIT, so I didn't elaborate. Guess I should've had my post deleted. Sorry.

ok i don't want to nitpick, but your edit didn't make sense. i didn't misunderstand it. it didn't make sense. my first comment was directed AT the edit.

"Maybe you're referring to not being able to delete and then paste."

delete then paste makes no sense. you delete something and it's gone. you can't paste it. he's not referring to delete and paste. he's referring to cut and paste.

Easy solution to that: Make a list of all the productive things you can now do with that time. Soon, you will be so busy, you'll be glad you don't have to constantly fix your Mac!

Thanks, I'll look into JView. From what I understand, show desktop is Command+Exposé (F3). Clicking on Exposé just brings up all your windows and clicking it again returns you back to the original screen you had IIRC. I've tried using hot-corners, but I must not understand it, because it didn't work when I did it.

The show desktop key (as of Snow Leopard) is set in System Preferences -> Exposé & Spaces and is by default F11. If you have a mouse with 3+ buttons, you can assign one of the buttons to show desktop.

Look for deals, I picked up Path Finder as part of a MacUpdate promo package. For the regular price of Path Finder alone I got a bunch of other stuff, some useful some fun.

Beyond Cut and Paste (which I too am used to from 15 years in Windows land) as well as tabbed windows and subversion integration, which are both really useful for me.

Just don't try to cut/paste files in the finder, or try to delete selected files in the trash, and don't try to resize windows from anywhere but the bottom right corner. Oh, and don't try to understand why some apps quit when you close the window and others don't... you will learn to appreciate that later.

Welcome to the cult
We will teach you the handshake later

Dang it, I still haven't been shown the double top secret handshake yet. I must not be cool enough yet! :D
