What is the idea of Windows XP 2021 Edition operating Microsoft?
Will it work the same as the origanal Xp?
I want to use XP for Retro Gaming i last week i bought loads of PC CD Rom,s most of the games are pre 2007.
L have another post on here about thin clint PC,s which i can use Windows 98. and Dos
What graphics cards still support XP ? i have a Dell 3020 SFF unfortunately I have the only SFF that only takes a single slot card like the 1030. I don,t suppose it will be a fully fledged XP .If not what is the point of it?. Phil says all these will work with XP will this one work with XP R5 340X ?
Unfortunately the 1030 does not support XP.
 
Personally, I think its a bit too risky to be running XP, given the vulnerabilities but that's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
 
You don't want the newest card for retro gaming. Which would be the GeForce GTX 900 series or Radeon R9 200 series, FYI. As newer cards can be buggy on old games. Generally it's better to go with era appropriate cards. To maximize compatibility.

Some games may also not work at all with newer cards. Without modding some of the games files. As they won't recognize the GPU model as valid. Sims 2 is like this for instance.

Maybe get something like a GeForce 6800/7800/8800 or Radeon X800/X1900/HD 2900. Those'll be plenty powerful for games of the era. Note on some older games. Even those may cause some issues. Like KOTOR has some bugs on ATI cards. I think on 9000 series and newer.

I'd also ditch that SFF PC. Get some used full size Core 2 Duo system.

Thanks for that x1900 £39. 7800 £25. 8800 is 155w draw have to make sure the PSU is over 400w. £32. yes i realise the SFF is out.All the cards you sugest are far to exspncive on eBay if they were in stock they would all be well under 10 pound in uk shop CEX unfortunately none are in stock.So i will go my route.Thanks anyway.

it is a sata not a pata PC, What do you think of this one velocityg4. Retro Arkel Gaming PC - Core 2 Duo E7500 @2.93GHz, 4GB, 320GB - Windows 10 i am not sure why it has Windows10 on it?It looks very bare in there.It is £35 shippied but i can make an offer.500PSU .It looks good to me but i can,t see any more conections for another drive.I have sent a message to the seller asking what Graphics card is in it.Should i gave for this ot the Dell with 750ti? I don,t see any dust in there either.

Holy heck!😲 I just looked at prices in the US. Those old cards are super expensive now. All this junk used to be dirt cheap. Like $10-$15 cheap. I guess retro gaming has gotten way more popular.

Maybe get a GeForce GTX 260 prices aren't too obscene on those and should have better retro compatibility than a newer card. You'll definitely need a better PSU. You could also get a GeForce 8600 GT. Those are respectable for those old games and will likely be fine with that PSU.

That computer above has a garbage PSU. It's 500W in name only. I doubt you'd get above 250W before it overheated or blew something out. It has so few connectors because it was never meant to actually handle 500W. Note it's absurdly high amperage for 3.3V and 5V and tiny cooling fan.

I'm sure it works fine with what it has in it. As that equipment doesn't have much load. It's an OK computer from it's time. But it was never anything special. As you don't want to spend much. The CPU, HDD space and RAM is stellar for gaming of the era. The motherboard isn't anything to write home about but it'll do it's job. Depending on which GPU it has. It might be good to go for retro gaming.

If the GPU is junk. You could get something like a GeForce 8600. Those seem to be available for cheap. You can also go with a GeForce 6600. Those models don't have much power draw and were popular models of that era. With the GeForce 6600 pay special attention you don't get an AGP model unless you get an AGP computer. AGP or PCIe x16 is something else to pay attention to with retro parts.

Don't know where a 750 Ti comes in. I don't see it posted anywhere. Just remember with a card this new. You'll have more compatibility issues to overcome in old games. Otherwise it's probably way more powerful than any retro card I listed. Plus being newer. It probably has a longer life expectancy.

It does not looks as if there are any connections for another drive.🙁US prices are a lot lower than the uk.It is because of all over utube.videos on retro gaming. I don,t want to spend money replacing the PSU.

GTX 285 THAT IS 204 Power draw.🙄that what mr tech recommends.
He mentions about there being problems with the 750ti being a bit new for XP.The seller has said i can have it for £32 is it worth it for that?if you say yes i will see if i can get it for 30.Let mr know.
Thanks for all your help.🙂You never know there might a decent card in there. The card looks a bit small.I have offered the seller £28 pounds i don,t know if he will accept of course ,if he says £30 pounds i will accept that.

I regularly use XP without any problems of safety and security... including surfing the web (though it is a bit of challenge because of using older web browsers). Windows 10 can be more risky than XP if people are going to act recklessly.

The industry overall has a financial interest in fear-mongering people off of older systems... and for grammy and grandpa who click on every link in every email they receive, yeah... they shouldn't be using a computer.

If you're building a PC for retrogaming, you're best off using retro hardware. It isn't just OS compatibility, but modern hardware will be way too fast for a lot of retro games. Or maybe look into the MiSTer FPGA project.

XP will be fine so long as you're not connecting it to the internet, but hardware support is going to be ... sparse.

Even connected to the internet, if you firewall it off, a lot of modern malware maybe won't run on it as its too old 😀

I'd also probably go back further to Windows 98 SE so you can run the old classic DOS games, but MiSTer can maybe cover most of that.

i get this one.They are the same price, this retro stuff is exspncive now due to people like Phil doing videos on it on utube. Thats why i am going down that Route,i see the seller has not got back to me about my offer of 28 pounds he offered it to me for 30 it does have Windows 10 on it.What do you think pf the PC it self?It looks amazingly dust free and the case looks in good shape to.I don,t want to pay a lot of money for one. This is inside the thin client.The thing about this one is you is the PCI slot Phil has put a sound blaster card in it.But that would cost a lot more than i paid for the unit in the first place.I wonder if a graphics card could be put in there ,no one on utube has tried that yet.The unit cost me 15 but cost the same amount in postage from Germany ,that was the only place i could get I will check MiSTer FPGA project out thanks.
And there is even a modern Browser that works on XP

Whats your option on the PC i want to buy?I did look at peoples reviews on the zxcool PSU people were saying it was more like 250w than a 500w.Why do manafactures say it is 500w when it is only a 250w one?I wish i could get stuff cheap like these utubers It is all ways well heeled people who find stuff or get it very cheap like this Aus ,do you believe someone would just put am IMAC in a skip?
When you put stuff in a skip you chuck them in not just put it in there.😙Years ago someone chucked out what was ether a *Cheese grater*Power Mac G5 or a Mac Pro ,living in the area i live i should think it was the former.But anyway at the time i did not know much about PC,s so left it there.

If you're referring to the Retro Arkel Gaming system, then it seems decent enough for the price. As I mentioned in the other thread you started, I'm not enthusiastic about running old software on vintage hardware, but since that's the path you want to go down, this doesn't seem like a bad option.

I don't know why people would say that a 500w PSU is more like 250. I would hope that they hooked them up to meters to confirm their suspicions. Maybe they have components that are drawing more power than is stated and they're assuming that the PSU's rating is to blame.

As for Youtubers who "find" things in the trash... not everything on Youtube is true. 😉 The guy who found the iMac in the skip didn't take video of him taking it out of the skip but made a point of wanting to show viewers that he was powering it up for the first time.

What's more likely possible is that some older friend or family member was about to toss out that iMac because it didn't work anymore and he offered to take it off their hands. Technically it was going to the skip but he rescued it from that fate... but that doesn't sound as exciting as finding it. So probably not an out-and-out lie but more of a little white lie.

The seller said he want go down any more than 30 i will take a chance on it for it at that price .I don,t know how it is so dust free in there. 🙄 Like you say i think it is ok for that price hopefully it is all working fine, there is a 30 day money back as it is on eBay. Someone else on a review of the PSU on Amazon said it was useless and chucked it away?😙And there selling it for 72pounds.?😙The guy on here earlier said it was more like 250w .Yes i know especially what is said on utube. But i take everything with a pinch of salt.I think you have nailed it there, about the IMAC.If someone was going to chuck one out they would just leave it outside for someone to take.I agree with you.🙂Thanks for the feedback🙂But should i go the compact Flash way or the Flash Dom?
 
I have just received the PC and to my horror there is no fan in there ,apart from the PSU fan.Does this work as a Fan the side panal with the plastic bit on it?
*The PC fully operational and functions as intended.*says the seller.
how can a computer work without a fan?

is the CPU fan even still intact or are there like no fans at all?

Dear god. Painting over RUSTED metal on an old PC? Hell nah... dude doesn't even know how to retrobrite a piece of plastic either. I really don't like the state of vintage tech youtube. I remember when it was just a few hobbyists messing with new world PPC systems, and now it's become an industry.

I'm probably being too blunt, but it's true. I am lucky to even have a good amount of computers I own now.
 
I have an old 2006 Dell D420 (somewhere between a high-end proto-netbook and a low-end proto-ultrabook), and I've got it dual-booting Debian 11 and Windows XP for old games. It only has a GMA 950 GPU and an ultra-low voltage Core Duo CPU so most hefty 3D games are out of the question, but for stuff like Sim City 2000 and 1995-2000 early Windows 3D games it runs fine!

For installing XP in 2021, there's a guy that maintains a "Windows XP SP4" updater that's essentially all the official Windows Update bugfixes and security updates for XP (including those for the Embedded edition, which got patches for several years after regular XP) rolled into a single installer. It doesn't install any obvious nonsense along with it and it seems to be highly recommended in retro computing circles, so I installed it on top of my fresh install of SP3 Pro and it seems to run smoothly.

There's also a browser called "Pale Moon" that's a FireFox fork and still supports XP, but generally what I do is download stuff on the Linux side (from safe sources like archive.org) and copy it over to the XP partition so I don't have to worry as much about cybersecurity mess.

I found out today that the cash machine at work still uses Windows XP. I came into work this morning and saw the machine displaying the Windows BSOD, so while no one else was around I switched it off and on at the wall socket, thinking well I can't possibly make it worse, and then watched it boot into Windows XP. After a few minutes the familiar 'insert your card' screen appeared and all was well.

Just shows that technology is levelling-off, in some ways. When XP was launched in 2001, it would have been pretty inconceivable for a customer-facing computer (or cash machine) to still be running an OS from 1981.

I got my XP on my PC ,with the exealant Easy2Boot , just the job for someone like myself. 🙂
Phils videos are very informative. 🙂 And a big shout out for Snappy drivers
i must admit i prefer people taking about how to do it rather than just words.I had to send the PC i mentioned on here back because it stopped working.And got a DELL 620 mt i5 2310 it had a GTX430i replaced it with a 7850 but unfortunately i could not get it to work 🙁 It was clicked in like they say it should, and the 6 pin connecter with the clip of it on the back of the GPU.The fans were spinning but no signal on the monitor. 🙁 So i put the GTX 430 back in that worked fine ,but i would like to get the 7850 working any one got any ideas how? 🙄I put a new EVGA 500w not the white cheaper version.
