Snow Leopard is too old. Once you have that installed, upgrade to 10.7.5 Lion.

Then install Firefox Legacy 68.12 ESR for modern browser support. It is up to date as of this week, in terms of security updates.

Forget about Windows XP, unless you have a specific reason to run it.

I personally wouldn't use a 14 old Mac as my main Mac. Then again, my parents only computer is a Mac I gave them and it a Mid 2007 iMac.
Indeed, a mid-2007 iMac. With 10.7.5 Lion and Firefox Legacy 68 ESR, it can work quite well, even with modern banking and tax sites.

BTW, my Mac Pro 2006 runs well with 10.11 El Capitan and Windows 10. It could function as someone's primary computer (although not for me). It runs even better now that I paid US$20 to get two new CPUs. It's now it's roughly as fast as a Core i5 Mac from several years ago.

Thank you and I understand all you said but for now this is a special project and I'll stick with XP and SL. I will look into your suggestions in future.

Good catch is right!

Finally fully installed but is that blue arrow telling me to install again?

one more elementary question; when can I eject Snow Leopard disc or does it stay there ?
Many thanks for your time and patience.

Just take the disc out. If it’s fully installed, you don’t need the disc anymore. You need to do the updates though.

Click on the apple logo in the top left corner in the menu bar to find the updater. I think it’s in the System Preferences.

I bought the Mid 2007 iMac for my parents back in 2010, I found a really good deal on a local selling website.

I have upgraded it over the years, adding a SSD, max RAM, and eventually upgrading it to El Capitan, which runs great on it for their needs.

They are currently using Firefox, and it still gets updates for now.

I also have a Mac Pro 1,1 with the 2x2.66 dual core Xeons, that I am currently using for my Plex server.

I bought it on the Apple Refurbished Store almost 14 years ago, and I have upgraded it many times over the years. RAM now has 11GB, GPU was upgraded two times now has the ATI Radeon HD 5870, and the internal drives have been changed out countless times, currently booting from SW RAID0 SSDs, and has two 4GB HDDs for Plex.

It currently has El Capitan on it, and it runs great, and is really fast. I could easily picture using it as a daily driver in a pinch.

The old Mac Pro runs so much better than my brand new work laptop with an i7 and 32GB of RAM on Windows 10. Much more enjoyable experience too.

And there it is.
Congrats that you got it working.

That is on the external drive, correct? Are you going to install the OS on the internal drive?

Do i really need Windows?
No one can answer this but you. We have no idea what your intentions are.

If you don't know if you need it, don't do it. You can always do it later.

You need to click on the disk's icon.
Good catch...

Good on @Nermal for catching that.

I wouldn't have caught that unless I was right there next to you.

Sometimes it is hard helping people with varying tech experience.

Something like that is very obvious to me, but I shouldn't think like that when assisting people.

I would consider it similar to having a tech support rep asking if the device that isn't working is plugged in. Frustrating for me for having to go through those early troubleshooting steps, but maybe a time saver for the tech support rep, as there are people that miss stuff like that.

Updates are done. Logged off twice and went back on no problem. Keeping it on external hd for now. That's not a problem. The Good Catch? Can't believe I looked at that disc icon and never thought to click. I won't bother with Windows. Battery is back in and fully charged. There is one question: so many items in the dropdown menus are greyed out. Is that normal or do they light up as needed. Example: Empty trash is greyed. Will it light up when there is trash?
There is a back story about this project but I don't want it on this forum. If you'd like to know let me know how to contact you in confidence. Thanks again.

Do you have something in the trash to empty? If not, it should be grey.

It is probably normal for many things to be greyed out unless certain conditions are met, such as files being in the trash can to empty it.
