Enjoying another Weihenstephaner Vitus today. I'll visit the Astra brewery tomorrow, as I'll be in Hamburg for unrelated reasons anyway, and I wonder what I will find.
Excellent.

Last week (or so), - in advance of the Yuletide season - I treated myself to the best part of half of a crate of Korbinian (courtesy of Weihenstephaner), and yesterday, I added several bottles each of Hefeweissbier, Hefeweissbier Dunkel, and Traditional Helles (plus, six more bottles of Korbinian) to this lot; anyway, this delightful selection has yet to be delivered, but - as I have been out quite a bit over recent days - this is not entirely the fault of the vendor, who had offered to effect a delivery of (this) beer today.

Hamburg did have an ale brewed with a pine tree in it. (Astra Fichten Fiete.) Quite interesting. I’ll get a Korbinian tomorrow(, probably!) but I’ll be at a whisky fair in Bremen, so there’s some time left before I’ll try it…

Whoops.

So, yeah, I do understand the recommendation. The Korbinian seems to not take coldness lightly though, it seems to prefer warmer temperatures than being taken from the fridge. Roasty malt meets breakfast cereals. Interesting beer, quite un-Bocky actually.

To my mind, a lot of the "heavier" and darker beers, such as many of the Trappist beers, and a doppelbock, such as Korbinian, do not react well to refrigeration; they are better served the way one might a red wine, in other words, somewhat closer to room temperature.

Lagers, IPAs, and a Pils style beer, will well repay a period of time in the fridge, but not the darker beers; besides, you need the beer to be closer to room temperature to bring out the taste and flavour profile of such a beer fully.

Delighted that you finally managed to lay hands on the beer.

I had an eventful evening with a home brewer. Today’s best: a maple syrup stout from US. No cask maturation. I’m afraid that old heavy matured stouts have ruined my senses.

Close to no cinnamon at all, but a lovely note of licorice in the back. Licorice is my only weakness in alcohol. Damn.

Shared a bottle of Korbinian with the brewer. It seems like doppelbocks which are really easy to drink fill a niche unknown to me. Amazing, in a way.

Trader Joe's recently had some Samuel Smith variety packs in stock at a good price, so I took the opportunity to reacquaint myself with some old friends (the Oatmeal Stout, Nut Brown Ale, and Taddy Porter) and make some new ones (I hadn't tried their Chocolate or Imperial Stouts before — both excellent).

I didn't know liquorice is used as a flavouring in some beers. I have tried a long time ago the strong and salty sweet (not very sweet) from Finland and quite liked it. It may be interesting in beer.

Is that the salty sweet liquorice flavoured liquer from Finland that is coloured black?

Yes, I had that years ago - a Finnish colleague brought some back from leave - and quite liked it.
