To be honest, I dislike enormous, cavernous, stores, and prefer them small and specialist in orientation.

However, whatever works.

I tend to buy my wine and beer from specialist stores, staffed by enthusiasts whom I know.

Total Wine and More is a PHENOMENAL store!! Yes, totally awesome! They sell wine (lots of brands, lots of different countries), they sell beers and ales -- again, lots of different brands, from many different countries, and they have an astonishing inventory of American "craft" beers. They also sell accessories, from big "Beer Boots" and schooners to glassware, including some with brewery labels. That's where I got my Stella Artois chalices several years ago and it's also where I picked up the fun "Game of Thrones"-associated ones from Ommegang Brewery. It's an amazing place to just wander around and gaze wonderingly at all the goodies on offer!

I've got something else I've got to do today so guess it'll be tomorrow when I get over there. Usually I go in with intentions of only buying a certain few things and wind up with loads more than planned! Since they sell beer by the individual bottle, too, it's a wonderful way to try out different ones before purchasing more of the same. Another nice thing about them is that their prices are usually a little lower than in local grocery stores or other places where one can buy beer and wine. That always helps!

When I get back to Virginia I visit that store, an excellent place!

I've been to Total Wine before in FL. You're right, they do have a wealth of good stuff, but I find they suffer from a curation problem. Namely, they don't curate!
 
Went to Mecca.....er, Total Wine and More, today! Geeze, I go in there with specific plans for purchasing certain items, and that's fine....but what about all of the other tempting goodies I just can't resist????!!!!! My plastic card groaned when I was checking out -- LOL! One thing I really love about this store is that one can select individual bottles of something and take them home for a try-out.....did quite a bit of that today, along with picking up my favorites: now I'm well-stocked for a while with St Bernardus and Trappiste Rochefort, plus some other goodies I already love in addition to a few bottles of something new to me. I was delighted to finally find a Smutty Nose, as the last time they didn't have it in stock, and I also picked up a couple of Founders (Old Curmudgeon and another ( I think it's called Double-Face ?) plus a few more from other American breweries. Their inventory of American craft beers/ales is truly astonishing. Couldn't find the nice Greek beer that I'd purchased a couple of months ago but spotted another one from the Greek Isles so nabbed that one.

Tonight I had the pleasure of sipping a St Bernardus ABT 12 to wind up my day...... Ah, bliss!

Well, there is nothing wrong - and an awful lot right - with unwinding in the company of a bottle (or two) of St Bernardus Abt 12.

The Trappist Rochfort 10 is one of my very favourite beers of all time; there is a beer that is so perfectly balanced, a beer rich with complex depth and flavour and one of the most utterly satisfying you will ever drink.
 
Yesterday we did a little supply run and I picked up a few things (some early seasonals), but the best score was Founders Double Trouble. As usual, Founders knocks it out of the park. They call this a "specialty", so it's not quite as hard to score at their "limited" beers, but still only available for a few months.

They also had Devils Dancer, a Limited brew, 112 IBUs! Also notable for it's kind of lofty price, and it's insane ABV @ 12% 😱

I may take the plunge tomorrow and pick up a 4-pack ...

That sounds terrific, and I hope you really enjoyed it.

Well, the KBS had a fairly 'insane' price, too but was a superb beer.

Actually, I love the names they put on their beers; 'Old Curmudgeon', 'Dirty Bastard', 'Devil's Dancer', 'Dark Penance', and the beer yo have mentioned 'Double Trouble'.

How did you find 'Double Trouble'?

Holy smokes!!!!!!!! I really need to up my game, I usually buy a bottle or two. Then I wonder why by the time the weekend rolls around I have to make another trip to the store! LOL

Surprisingly, it was just in the beer cave with the other Founders products (this supplier carries a pretty big inventory of Founders products) and there was a pretty decent supply of it and the DD. I didn't have to sign in blood like I did for the KBS 😀

I had a DT last night ( ... the beer, not the me ... 😀 ) and it was superb. A huge aroma of citrus, pine, the hops hit you right up front, then there's a nice light maltiness midway through, then the finish, wow, all those hops just explode, then fade with a nice bitter finish, like a grapefruit or citrus rind.

That is an excellent tasting review, and thanks for it.

Actually, since receiving excellent advice an recommendations on this very thread, I have had something of an epiphany re some of the transatlantic breweries, above all, Founder's.

While, normally, my preferences strongly incline towards continental (Begian, for example) beers, my eyes have been opened re some of the exceptionally good products crafted by some of the excellent transatlantic breweries.

Well, for what it is worth, I tend to buy beer by the crate, too. Mind you, I don't always buy a crate of one single type of beer; rather, my crates tend to be mixed.

There is nothing worse than finding out - invariably late on a wet Saturday night - that you have run out of beer…….

This is what I usually do, but I haven't stepped up to a full crate worth of beer.. yet. I think it is time. 😀

Perhaps surprisingly, the liver is one of the most resilient organs in the body; okay, given what it is tasked with, this should come as no great surprise.

Actually, I find that mixed crates work well for me and allow for variety when you go looking for a beer to sip in the evening.

Double Trouble! THAT's it! I couldn't remember the correct name last night. I bought one bottle of it to sample, and from the description above, I'll be really glad I did and heading back to the store for more sooner rather than later!

At Total Wine they provide cardboard carriers (six-packs) so that it makes it easy for the consumer to select individual bottles and tuck them into the slots for convenience in carrying later. There is something psychological that goes on with that, too, as after all, one can't have a carton with say, only four beers in it? Might as well pick up a couple more, fill that six-pack carton.....LOL! When one has an entire shopping cart filled with six-pack cartons and four-packs and large single bottles (got me another "Blushing Monk" while it's still available, too, even though I've still got some in the fridge), that's a LOT of beer! LOL!

Hm. Sounds as though it has worked out how best to attract (and retain) the interest (and wallet) of the consumer….

Actually, from personal experience, I am well aware of the sort of place where your pocket is burned or your credit card smoulders when you visit.

Never mind. Enjoy the experience of shopping there and of sipping what you buy there.
