Winterboard Lite: improve the performance of Winterboard!

Winterboard Lite by David Ashman & Saurik is a new MS extension that reduces memory usage when some features are not used:

    - Turns off UIImage loading if there no themes with UIImages
    - Turns off UISound support if there no themes with sounds
    - Turns off localization support unless the info.plist for a theme includes the key "Localized" with the value true

To install add the following Cydia source: http://david.ashman.com/beta

Do you have to uninstall the original Winterboard?

Why wouldn't you want to? Winterboard makes the iPhone battery 10x worse than what it really is. I'll pass. Not only does it kill battery it slows the phone down tremendously.

Winterboard Lite will be no different.

    That's a ridiculous exaggeration.

I have noticed almost no change to my iPhone battery life since jailbreaking (resetting to factory defaults) and jailbreaking again, nor a significant change to the speed of my iPhone 3G. I have noticed thoroughly enjoying the use of features that jailbreaking has added to my iPhone experience.

There is without a doubt a performance hit for every jailbreak application you install that runs as a background app. However, you have control over what you install. Winterboard doesn't have a noticeable effect on my iPhone.

I have to agree with him. Uninstall WinterBoard and go on stock firmware, you WILL notice a difference in how fast applications open.

This issue has been argued forever. Yes, WinterBoard slows down your phone and eats up resources. The intent of Lite is not to make WB free, but to reduce the cost to a minimum for those people that are willing to make the trade off of resources for customizability.

I installed Winterboard Lite and since I don't have any scientific way to verify that it speeds anything up, I can only tell you that it doesn't hurt anything  and my apps seem to be opening with very little lag. My categories are where I often got annoyed with lag and they are now opening without much (but a little) delay.

FYI, after the installation, I still have my background wallpaper/lockscreen wallpaper, custom carrier logo/wifi icon/signal bar, numeric battery indicator, blank icon, also I have 5 icon dock, 5 icon row and 5 icon column and I don't use any theme, iphone seems like a little snappier when opening categories folder, looks like it is a keeper.:)

Why do some people come to the hacks forums if they're so against jailbreaking?

No noticeable performance boost. It has, as it said it would, disabled features of my theme, and disabling the addon doesn't bring them back. An unistall is the only way.

The individual sounds more against Winterboard than jailbreaking.

You can Enable/Dissable the UIImage, UISound and Font Support from Settings -> WinterBoard Lite

    Update: WinterBoard Lite project stopped

    All,

I'm temporarily shutting this project down. Based on Saurik's feedback, I believe I may have been barking up the wrong tree. It seems that my interpretation of memory readings on the iPhone may have been incorrect leading me to believe WB was using excess memory.

    Thanks,
    dave
