So I downloaded winterboard and some themes for it but I can't figure out how to "activate" any of the themes... I click on them and the check mark appears and then it resprings but the theme didn't take effect... What is going on?

Well dang...I'd have to agree with Dwalls then. Just might not be compatible...

If you go into settings and 'reset all data' (don't worry, you won't loose any data doing so) and your iPhone resets and stalls in safe mode then the theme(s) you have loaded in winterboard are not compatible.
Remove the theme through Cydia and turn your iPhone off and then back on.

Just make sure the themes you download are ip4 compatible w/4.1. Thats it and turn summerboard off in winterboard, for hd effect.

Yes. Through much trial and error I have found this system to work well.
I had a couple of themes that wouldn't load correctly on my iP4 and were causing me problems.
I reset my data and my iPhone went into safe mode. I cleared out the two themes and my iPhone works perfectly and quickly too. It only takes a few minutes to do this and there is no harm or worry of damage.
