Here's something that's been driving me nuts. Hopefully someone out there can help me!

On the XP desktop, I right-click and choose Arrange by name.
(I am assuming this means alphabetically)
The result is nowhere near alphabetical! The icons go from M, to I, to A, back to M!

I also found similar behavior with OS X, but less severe. My Mac desktop always keeps Macintosh HD on top, but at least everything else under it is properly alphabetized.

Any thoughts?

Startup Disk is always top left, that's just a Mac thing. Always has been, always will be. Never had any problems with the rest being in alphabetical order.

You can make it not show any Disks at all by using Finder preferences.

Can't comment on Windows XP.
 
XP always organises things that way, System folders (my comp, my docs, recycle bin etc), IE, other shortcuts.
