Hi all, bit of an odd issues which I can't seem to google much information for. Basically while surfing the web with any browser it appears to lose the connection every 5 minutes or so for about 5-10 seconds and then it comes back. If I'm watching youtube or iplayer it is very noticible but if just randomally surfing I get 'Could not connect to Internet' messages in my browser roughly every 5 minutes.

I checked the connection status and Ethernet remains green throughout so perhaps it's an issue with my mac or mavericks? I really hope I don't need to reinstall. Is it possible it's a router issue? Already gone and reset that to factory settings which at first appeared to help but I quickly realised nothing had changed.

Does any have any ideas?

Thanks for reading

can you check if it drops the connection when on wireless?

Hi Cristian, thanks for the reply - where my iMac is, the Wi-Fi signal isn't amazing but signs were encouraging when I tried, it still appeared to slow and cut out briefly each time but not as often. I took the cable out and laid a new one down and it does seem a bit better but every so often, it still cuts out so I can only presume it's an issue with the mac but no idea why though, it wasn't like this a week ago :(

I have this issue as well and traced it back to my router. Turns out that every now and then, the DSL indicator on the router would just suddenly go out and then take another 2-3 minutes before it lit up.

I think your router could be the culprit.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. If the connection dropped for any good length of time I would have also thought it was the router but the fact that it only drops for about 5 seconds at a time and incredibly frequently makes me wonder if that is the case. I rang my provider today (Virgin in the UK) and asked if they could send me a new 'Superhub 2' and they agreed. I'll have to wait a few days to get it but it will be interesting if it resolves the issue. I'm also tempted to try and use the existing hub as a WAP, though this is dependent entirely on if it's knackered or not. It's only 3 months old though so again, it would be a surprise if it really was the culprit.

As an aside I've been booting off a rugged tbolt ssd lately so I booted the mech HD to see if it resolved the issue. I'm actually glad to say it didn't because the speed difference is incredible, I'm already used to the SSD, so much so that the HD feels like an absolute dog by comparison!
