Because most of the wired CarPlay chargers provide only an Amp or two of current. It charges more slowly than the phone discharges.
Not really sure if this is for someone else. Didn’t say anything about charging or anything.

Was just making a point in 9hrs drive with wireless carplay + SiriusXM + maps I didn’t have massive battery drain.

Hi everyone!
I purchased a new head unit for my car that supports wireless CarPlay, however I noticed that the battery drain on the iPhone is massive (15% for a 55 minutes trip with Maps and music playing).
So for those of you that use wireless CarPlay, do you keep your phone connected to the charger in your car or do you let it discharge? Which do you think is best to preserve battery health?
For short trips, even with GPS and music, just wireless CarPlay is fine. If it is going to be an hours long trip, then I’ll plug my phone into a USB cable connected to a power port (aka cigarette lighter). Or I may plug in to the wired CarPlay connection to get both at once. Flexible options. Wireless CarPlay is convenient but there are small tradeoffs.

Is this with OEM wireless CarPlay or aftermarket dongle? That (lack of) battery drain is amazing!

It depends on the aftermarket head unit I believe...
I have a Pioneer with wireless CarPlay. It has a GPS antenna I had to install and it doesn't use much phone battery. I am guessing the head unit uses its GPS vs the phone like an OEM.
I use a CarPlay2Air adapter I got many years ago to make my truck CarPlay wireless. It has a setting to use the vehicle GPS or phone. I use the vehicle and have minimal drain with it as well.

I still plug in if it will be a many hour trip with either vehicle to keep the phone from running down.

Is your screen off? My last car had wireless CarPlay and used nominal battery as long as the screen was off.
