Pretty sure this is news. A BMW forum poster from Sweden reports that wireless CarPlay is working on his just-arrived 2017 4-series car.

Wow. This was a quiet roll out. Does this require the hardware or can I go wireless in my 2016 Volt?

Unfortunately BMW is going to nickel and dime you by charging $300 for the Car Play update. Of course this is nothing in the overall price. Just a 'slap in the face' way of doing it.

I'd like to know the answer to this, as well. I have a 2016 Civic with wired CarPlay. Wireless CarPlay would be great.

I tired in my 2016 Volt and couldn't get any wireless CP connection.

You need wifi in your car and an update from the car manufacturer if you want wireless Carplay in existing cars.

My car has Wifi, but I'm not sure I'd keep it activated just for wireless CarPlay.

Like @ScottC7 i also have a Civic 2016 we do have wifi in the car, but i think for this feature to work the manufacturer would have to update the head unit. That might never happened, all we can do is hope.

A software update is entirely different from needing different hardware. We COULD at least pay a small fee for upgraded software.

According to Apple's requirements, the wifi in the car also has to be able to be a "base station." If the wifi is only capable of being a client, it won't work for wireless Carplay.

Yes that's what i meant sorry, update the software on the head unit, not the hardware itself.

I can confirm this as well. Wireless CarPlay works great and I would hate to have to go back to wired. Virtually hassle-free the way BMW has it implemented. Very convenient.
