Is Apple EVER going to fix this? I have gotten this message every single day since I got my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. My wrist is close to the computer, just like it was with my iMac and old Intel MacBook Pro. Like, I could be several feet away and it would still unlock them.

How many others get this when they try to unlock their Mac with Apple Watch? Has anyone been able to fix it?

I've seen this occasionally, like maybe once/month or even less, running latest Monterey beta on my MBA and latest Monterey on my iMac, there have been threads in the MBP forum but I don't really follow as I'm not seeing this as an issues for me.
I'd remove the AW from the MBP and maybe go as far as unpair/re-pair. If that doesn't help contact Apple

I've seen this a lot since the WatchOS 8.3 update, but mostly with my MBP, a very common occurrence despite removing & re-adding the watch to it.
My iMac has failed to unlock a couple of times, but has overall remained very reliable in unlocking - even when I'm a good distance from it.

I've also experienced the same issue since purchasing my M1 Max MBP and Apple Watch Series 7, on a somewhat regular basis... ?
Do you think it's hardware or software related?

I think it is software related. Before I got my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I had an Intel MacBook Pro and an Intel iMac. This behavior started happening on my Intel MacBook Pro, but never happened on my iMac. It has done this since day one on my M1 Pro.

It does seem to happen less if I make sure I keep my hand/watch super close to the Touch ID button.

Not happy to hear you are experiencing the same thing on a Series 7, because I just ordered one! My Series 4 battery can’t keep up anymore.

I received my Apple Watch Series 7 today, and I do believe it has been more reliable throughout today in unlocking my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. There were a few times today that it didn't work, but it failed nearly every time on my Series 4. Will keep an eye on it and see if it continues to be more reliable.

Get it occasionally with my Series 7 watch and 2020 MAC Mini. Always seems to unlock it albeit slowly and only occurs occasionally.

I have a series 5 and it seems like the Apple Watch will open my 27" 2015 desktop quickly in the morning, but during the day I intermittently get the "weak connection" message or "password required" message. If I hit "escape" and push the space bar again it usually opens right up.

I know I'm late to this party, but the 'connection too weak to unlock..' thing with my MBA is really ticking me off and my angry search led me here. Now I know how long it's been an issue I'm even less impressed with Apple.

I suggest you contact Apple support

I have the MBP 2015 model and aw4. I got that message a lot. I finally rebooted the MBP and the problem went away. Could it be a memory problem with Monterey?

It doesn't happen with my (Intel) iMac running Monterey, only with my M1 MBA which is quite frequently rebooted because I tend to power it down before closing the lid.

i have the same problem with apple watch series 6 and m1 macbook air, m1 mac mini. Is very frustrating.
